Top five local sports stories noted

 

CRESCO - The Crestwood and Turkey Valley sports teams both enjoyed a good deal of success during 2016. While there were many great highlights from the year, below are a list of five local sports stories that stood out in 2016.
Story No. 1: Turkey Valley girls’ basketball team qualifies for State. The TV girls’ basketball team, ranked number one for several weeks in 2016, defeated Northwood-Kensett, on Feb. 22 to advance to State for the first time in school history. At the State Tourney, the Trojans beat Mount Ayr and Burlington Notre Dame before losing to Springville in the title game.
Story No. 2: Seven Cadet wrestlers advance to State. Competing at the Class 2A District Tournament, seven Cadet grapplers finished in the top two to advance to the State Meet. They included: Kaden Anderlik (first, 106); Michael Millage (second, 120); Chase Lienhard (second, 132); Neil Clement (second, 152; Trae Pecinovsky (first, 145); Ryan Steffen (first, 126) and Jacob Knutson (second, 285).  Five Cadets earned medals at the State Tournament. Michael Millage placed second, Ryan Steffen was fourth, Chase Lienhard took sixth, Kaden Anderlik was sixth and Trae Pecinovsky placed sixth.
Story No. 3: Crestwood High School announces New Stadium Project in July. The New Stadium project, which will take place in late 2016 and throughout 2017, will include improving the steps of the stadium bleachers, the press box, the concession stands, restroom facilities, a new entrance, new light towers, lights, resurfacing the track and a new scoreboard. The new scoreboard was installed in Sept. 2016.
Story No. 4: Crestwood football team wins district title. The Cadets defeated Clear Lake, 27-6, on Oct. 14 to clinch their first district title since 1995. Crestwood played Union in the Class 2A playoffs and lost to end its season at 7-3 overall.
Story No. 5: South Winn/Turkey Valley girls’ and boys’ cross country teams and three Crestwood runners qualify for State Cross Country Meet. The SW/TV girls’ team placed second at the State Meet in October. Crestwood runners Ellie Friesen, Hope Dohlman and Michael Mashek all competed well at the State Meet. Friesen posted the highest finish for the Cadets by placing eighth.
