Obermann earns track coaching honor

CRESCO - Jim Obermann, Head Coach of the Crestwood Girls’ Track Team, was recently chosen as one of five coaches throughout Iowa to receive the At Large Cooaches of the Year Award for Girls’ Track in Class 3A for the 2018 season.
Competing at the 2018 State Track Meet, the Crestwood girls’ team tied for second place in the team standings with Dubuque Wahlert with 64 points. The second place finish was Crestwood’s highest team finish at the State Track Meet in school history.
The award marks the second coaching award Obermann earned during the 2017-18 school year. In the fall of 2017, he was named the Class 2A Girls’ Region Cross Country Coach of the Year. The 2017 Crestwood girls’ cross country team earned first place at the State Qualifier Meet and finished fourth at the State Meet.
“This is a great honor,” Obermann said, referring to the track award. “This award is a direct representation of our team, and it’s also an honor for our assistant coaches, Karen Steffen and Keith Slifka.
“We have a lot of great kids on our team. With the award, it comes down to how well our kids performed at the State Track Meet this year. If our kids don’t perform as well as they did at State, the award doesn’t happen,” Obermann said.
The coach noted the award reflects the hard work of the students.
“This award is a great representation of our program,” Obermann said. “It’s a good representation of the Crestwood girls and the many sports they compete in.
“It’s a feather in the cap for all the girls that represent Crestwood. This award is a good representation of our program and how we do things the right way,” Obermann said.
