No. 14 Cadets crown four champs, grab second at Flanagan

CRESCO - The Class 2A No. 14 Crestwood wrestling team competed very well at the Flanagan Invitational on Saturday as the Cadets crowned four individual champions and placed second overall with 213 points.
Crestwood’s champions included: No. 3 Kaden Anderlik (120 pounds), No. 3 Ryan Steffen (145), Chris Guest (152) and No. 9 Jacob Knutson (285). Sawyer Peckham (285) and Ross Niewoehner (160) both placed second. Jared Knutson (195) and Hunter Fousek (126) both took third. Matthew Slifka (113), Hunter Bye (132), Clay Schemmel (138) and Treyton Burnikel (182) all placed fourth. Nathaniel Bigalk took fifth at 106.
Crestwood Head Coach Keith Slifka said the Cadets battled well against some solid competition at the Flanagan Invite on Saturday.
“We knew going into the tournament we needed to work hard,” Slifka said. “All the teams at the tourney were equal, and they all brought some pretty good individual wrestlers. We had beaten Cedar Falls earlier in the season in a dual, but we were a little banged up (Saturday). We were open at 170 because Colter Bye didn’t wrestle (because of an injury).
“All-in-all, everyone who scored points for us finished in the top four, except for Nathaniel Bigalk, who took fifth at 106. Nathaniel battled hard and came back to beat a kid in the fifth place match (Bradon Knutson of FCLMC) who had beaten him earlier in the tournament, so that was good.
“Matthew Slifka (113) took fourth and had a nice finish. Kaden Anderlik (120) dominated his opponents, and he had two falls. He’s looking strong and doing a good job.
“Hunter Fousek had a good day to take third at 126. Hunter Bye placed fourth at 132, which was encouraging. Clay Schemmel took fourth at 138, which was exciting to see.
“Ryan Steffen (first at 145) had a good tournament, and he dominated his bracket. Chris Guest (first at 152) pinned his way through the tournament. Both Ryan and Chris did a nice job.
“One of the nice surprises for us was Ross Niewoehner (second at 160). He’s been wrestling at 170, but with Colter Bye out, we moved him down to 160. He had two pins to get in the finals, and he almost had a pin in the finals before he lost. It was exciting to see Ross get to the finals. He’s a kid that never stops. If he cleans up his technique, he’ll be fun to watch.
“Trey Burnikel (182) had a couple good wins to finish fourth, which helped us in the team race. Stone Peckham had some tough kids in his bracket, but he still took third at 220.
“At heavyweight, we had two kids in the finals with Sawyer Peckham and Jacob Knutson, which is nice to see. Jacob got the win, but Sawyer also had a nice tournament.
“Overall, I was pleased with our week of wrestling. We beat Waverly (on Jan. 4) and competed hard against some top teams. This was a learning experience for the younger kids, and our older kids got tested. At this point of the season, we want to stay as healthy as we can and compete. I’m excited about where we are right now,” Slifka said.
The Cadets will host Charles City and Decorah on Jan. 11.
