No. 1 Crestwood girls rip New Hampton, crush Oelwein in first round

CRESCO - Following a back-and-forth first quarter, the Class 3A No. 1 Crestwood varsity girls’ basketball team caught fire in the second quarter and rolled to a 67-29 win over New Hampton on Feb. 6.
Taking on Oelwein in the first round of the Class 3A Region 4 Tournament Saturday at home, the Cadets routed the Huskies, 76-16.
Crestwood (21-0) will advance to play Waukon (14-6) in the region semifinals Feb. 14 at home at 7 p.m. The winner will play either Anamosa (18-4) or Mount Vernon (16-6) in the region final on Feb. 17 at 7 p.m. in Oelwein.
Cadets 67, NH 29
New Hampton gave the No. 1 Cadet girls’ team a close battle for the first eight minutes of the game before Crestwood pulled away in the second quarter on its way to a 67-29 win.
The Cadets held a slim 13-11 lead with three minutes left in the first before going on a 9-2 run to take a 22-13 edge into the second period. Crestwood went on a 21-5 run in the second to push the lead to 43-18 and never looked back.
“I can honestly say that our defense didn’t key our offense (early in the game),” Cadet Coach Doug Sickles said. “Our defense was kind of shady early on as we allowed too many uncontested shots by New Hampton in the first quarter. We’ll need to shore up our defense in practice.
“On the positive side, I’m very happy with the amount of assists we had. We finished with 20 assists, which is very good. We also shot the ball very well, and I can’t complain about that. Overall, we just need to play tougher coming out of the gate,” Sickles said.
Cadet statistics
Sharon Goodman led Crestwood with 22 points, had six rebounds and two blocks. Shannon Pisney had 15 points, including one three-pointer, four rebounds and three steals. Ellie Friesen had 14 points, including four three-pointers, dished out nine assists, had six rebounds and two blocks.
Emily Friesen had eight points, including two three-pointers, four assists and four rebounds. Brynn Bodermann had five points, including one three-pointer, two assists and two steals. Laken Lienhard had three points and three rebounds. Kaylee Thomas had two assists. Taylor Shelton had one rebound.

Cadets 76, Oelwein 16
The No. 1 Crestwood girls’ team built a 22-5 first period lead over Oelwein and put the hammer down over the final three periods on its way to a 76-16 thrashing of the Huskies Saturday in the first round of the region tournament.
The Cadets went on a 25-2 run in the second period to take a 47-7 halftime lead and went on a 21-0 run in the third to extend the lead to 68-7 going into the fourth.
“Oelwein hit some shots on us early in the game,” Sickles said. “After that, our defense did a good job of contesting Oelwein’s shots. I was really happy to see we had 28 assists and only five turnovers. Our girls shared the ball extremely well.
“Oelwein played a junk defense, and we took what they gave us. Oelwein tried to take Ellie Friesen and Shannon Pisney away from us on offense, but when they did that, we had a lot of other girls open. Brynn Bodermann and Emily Friesen had a nice night on offense for us,” Sickles noted.
