DECORAH - The Crestwood girls’ track team turned in several strong performances Saturday against good competition at the Decorah Invitational held at Luther College. No team scores were recorded.
Cadet junior Ellie Friesen set a meet record in the 800 meters as she took gold in a time of 2:20.78 seconds. Katie Saner won gold in the long jump at 15 feet, 11.25 inches, and she placed fourth in the 55 dash in 7.68 seconds.
Rachel Steffen took second in the long jump at 4 feet, 8 inches. Cassie Ollendieck was third (4-6) and Sharon Goodman placed fourth (4-6). The shuttle hurdle team of Emma Cotant, Emily Friesen, Rachel Steffen and Taylor Shelton placed second in 37.62 seconds.
Crestwood Coach Jim Obermann was pleased to see the Cadets compete well in several events.
“Overall, this meet was a great opportunity for the kids because almost everyone on the team competed,” Obermann said. “Many of our Junior Varsity girls got some good experience, and we had a lot of good performances.
“It was nice to see Ellie Friesen set a new meet record in the 800 meters, and it was good to see Katie Saner win the long jump. Hope Dohlman ran well in the 1600 meters by placing fourth.
“We were strong in the field events. In the high jump, we took second, third, fourth and sixth place, which was very impressive. Our (shot put) throwers also performed well. All of our kids competed well. We are a deeper team this year, which is an advantage. This meet was a solid step forward for us,” Obermann said.
The Cadet girls’ team will compete at Postville on Tuesday, April 4.
McAllister, Mashek compete
Two Crestwood senior boys, Austin McAllister and Michael Mashek, also competed well at Saturday’s meet at Luther.
