Crestwood wrestlers pin Oelwein, place second at WSR

CRESCO - Facing a solid Oelwein squad in a dual Thursday, the Class 2A No. 8 Crestwood varsity wrestling team chalked up eight match wins en route to a 42-33 win over the Huskies.
Competing at the Rick Caldwell Invitational in Waverly Saturday, the Cadets wrestled well as they placed third out of 10 teams with 174 points and had three individuals finish in the top three. Ryan Steffen took first at 132, Colter Bye placed third at 138 and Trevor Trende finished second at 195.
Cadets 42, Oelwein 33
The Cadets concluded the dual portion of their season Thursday with a solid 42-33 win over Oelwein. Crestwood posted a solid 15-6 overall dual mark, including a 4-2 record and third place in the Northeast Iowa Conference.
“This was Oelwein’s last dual meet of the season, and they came out with some energy,” Cadet Coach Keith Slifka said. “Oelwein was ready to wrestle, and they gave us a good battle.
“We finished the dual season with only one loss against a Class 2A team, which was against No. 1 New Hampton. I was very pleased with that. Our other dual losses were at the Battle of Waterloo in December against 3A ranked schools. In our tournaments this year, we’ve finished in the top half in all of them, and we’ve placed ahead of many 3A schools (in several tournaments). One reason for placing so high is because we have a full lineup. Every week, we’ve had kids step up and do a good job,” Slifka said.

W-SR Tournament
Taking on many strong teams Saturday in Waverly, the Cadets turned in several strong performances on their way to placing third with 174 points. Waverly-SR won the team title with 252 points.
“Most of our kids had several matches during the day, including some kids who had four matches,” Slifka said. “The only two teams who finished ahead of us were two strong teams in Waverly-Shell Rock and Fort Dodge. We competed against a lot of good teams we hadn’t wrestled before, such as Ankeny Centennial and Storm Lake.
“Ryan Steffen wrestled well. He won a 6-3 match in the finals (against Ian Heise of WSR). Wyatt Scheidel also had a good tournament with only one loss (against Trevor Byram of WSR). Wyatt is wrestling pretty well right now.
“Overall, we have a full lineup right now and our guys are wrestling well. Except for a few minor injuries, we’re pretty healthy right now. Our next meet is the conference tournament on Jan. 28, so we’ll have some time to polish some things.
“A lot of the same teams we will see at sectionals (Feb. 4) will also be at the conference tournament. We know what to expect from a lot of the teams in our conference. We’d like to put some of our guys in the finals at the conference tournament. Right now, we are in a sprint until the end of the season. We want to stay healthy and peak at the right time. We’d also like to qualify for the team regionals (scheduled for Feb. 7),” Slifka said.
