Crestwood wrestlers crown six champs, nab second at MFL Tourney

MONONA - The Crestwood varsity wrestling team performed well at the MFL-Mar-Mac Invitational on Saturday as the Cadets finished second overall with 238.5 points and crowned six individual champions including: Kaden Anderlik (120), Ryan Steffen (145), Chris Guest (152), Colter Bye (160), Stone Peckham (220) and Jacob Knutson (285).

In the Junior Varsity meet Saturday, Sawyer Peckham and Judd Grover both won gold for the Cadets. Josh Pavlovec was second, Kole Menne took third and Cade Wenthold and Brendon Dixon both placed fourth.

Crestwood Head Coach Keith Slifka praised all the varsity and JV grapplers battling well against solid competition.

“As a group, we wrestled well,” Slifka said. “We got six guys in the finals and had six champions.

“At 106, Nathaniel Bigalk had a nice day and finished with a pin. Matthew Slifka (113) had his best day of the year, finishing third overall with three pins.

“Kaden Anderlik (120) was very impressive, and he dominated his opponents to take first. At 132, Hunter Bye placed fourth, and he is gaining more confidence.

“At 138, Clay Schemmel placed third with a nice pin in the finals against Fennimore. Ryan Steffen (145) earned the Outstanding Wrestler of the Tournament award, and he wrestled well with a fall and a major decision to place first.

“Wrestling at 152, Chris Guest took first, and he looked really strong. At 160, Colter Bye took first with a decision over a tough Fennimore kid in the finals.

“At 182, Trey Burnikel looked really impressive. He still needs work on his offense, but he is coming along well as a varsity wrestler. Jared Knutson wrestled well to take third at 195.

“Stone Peckham (220) recorded three falls to take first. He is competing well and showing his experience. Jacob Knutson (285) had two pins and a decision to earn first.

“Overall, I’m happy with the way all of our varsity and JV guys competed at the tournament. It was a good day of wrestling for us, but we know we still need to work on a few things,” Slifka said.
