CRESCO - Outstanding play on both sides of the ball helped the Crestwood varsity football team notch its first win of the season on Friday, Sept. 15 during homecoming as the Cadets trounced the Oelwein Huskies, 54-14.
The win improved Crestwood’s overall mark to 1-3 and 1-0 in District 3. The Cadets will play Waukon (1-3, 0-1) on the road on Friday, Sept. 22.
One tremendous key for the Cadets during Friday’s homecoming win over the Huskies was their prolific rushing attack. Crestwood racked up an eye-popping 494 yards rushing and eight touchdowns on 43 carries, good for an average of 11.5 yards per carry.
Junior running back Aidan Skoda led the charge for the Cadets as he tallied 153 yards and three touchdowns on nine carries. Jose Lievano posted 119 yards and one score on 10 carries. Brock Voyna had 77 yards and two scores on seven carries.
Cadet quarterback Dylan Shelton also played well as he completed six of nine pass attempts for 84 yards.
“We started the game a lot faster than we had the previous three weeks,” Cadet Head Coach Justin Denner said. “We got a score right away on our first drive. Aidan Skoda, Brock Voyna, Robby Ollendieck, Jose Lievano and all of our running backs ran really hard. Our offense line took a big step forward this week with not only their preparation but how they played the game. I’m super proud of our guys.
“On defense, we gave up a couple of big plays to Oelwein, but overall, we played a lot better. We forced Oelwein into a couple of turnovers. One of Oelwein’s fumbles was the result of a big hit by our second defender coming in to finish the play, which is what we preach - finishing the tackle. To see those things come to fruition was huge.
“This win absolutely gives us momentum going forward. Last week, we told our guys that the non-district games were done and now we’re back to 0-0. Now with this win, we’re 1-0 and in the top half of the district, which is ultimately what is important.
“Now we’re going to do everything we can to keep going (in the right direction). We’ve got four tough games coming up and we’re excited about that,” Denner said.
