Crestwood girls' track team wins NFV Invitational

WEST UNION - Cool temperatures did not bother the Crestwood girls’ track team much on Friday at the North Fayette Valley Invite as the Cadets grabbed first place overall with 201.33 points and captured gold or silver in 13 events.
Cadet sophomore Katie Saner and junior Ellie Friesen combined to chalk up 70 points for Crestwood. Saner won gold in four events including: 100 dash (13.06 seconds), 200 (27.61), long jump (14 feet, 10 inches) and the 4x400 relay (4:24.68). Friesen took first in three events including: 800 (2:27.44), 3000 (10:36.64) and the 4x400 (4:24.68).
Freshman Sharon Goodman won gold in the high jump at 4 feet, 10 inches while teammates Rachel Steffen and Cassie Ollendieck tied for second at 4-6.
Sophomore Hope Dohlman won gold in the 1500 (5:28.94) and she took second in the 400 dash in 1:08.37. Megan Ryan took second in the discus at 99 feet, 2 inches.
Crestwood nabbed second place in the distance medley (4:57.42), the 4x800 (11:38.91) and the shuttle hurdle relay (1:17.27).
Cadet Head Coach Jim Obermann was pleased with the way the team competed throughout the meet.
“Considering this was our first outdoor meet of the season, I thought all the girls competed well and had several nice performances,” Obermann said. “It was good to see everyone on the team get involved in the meet. We saw a lot of good improvement (in many events) from the indoor season.
“Ellie Friesen, Hope Dohlman and Katie Saner all led the way for us, and they all competed very well. Sharon Goodman had her best jump in the high jump (4-10). Megan Ryan had a nice night in the discus as she had a personal record (99-2).
“Mattie Slavin showed some improvement in the 3000 and 800. It was good to see many of our relay teams place first or second. As the weather gets warmer, I think we’ll see our performances improve even more,” Obermann said.
The Cadets will compete at the Decorah Invite April 7 and at Osage on April 11.
