CRESCO - Taking the field against a good Charles City squad on May 30 at home, the Crestwood baseball team routed the Comets, 10-0, in six innings in game one before Charles City won game two, 9-7.
Playing a non-conference game against Osage Thursday, the Cadets took an early lead before the Green Devils rallied late to edge Crestwood, 17-15, in eight innings.
Traveling to Decorah Friday, Crestwood stumbled as the Cadets dropped both games of the doubleheader, 2-12 and 3-4.
Competing at their home tournament Saturday, the Cadets hammered MFL-MM, 18-2, in four innings in game one before they lost a tough game to South Winn, 9-10, in 10 innings in the championship game.
Cadets 10, Comets 0 (G1)
In game one against Charles City, Cadet pitcher Clayton Ollendieck chalked up the win as he went six strong innings, allowed only one hit, no runs, four walks and he struck out eight batters to help the Cadets cruise to a 10-0 victory.
Crestwood raced to a 4-0 lead after one inning. Clayton Ollendieck ripped a double to left to drive in Austin McAllister, Shane Vokaty and Spencer Cuvelier. Colten Wiley singled to drive in Zack Lane.
“We set the tone for the game by scoring four runs in the first,” Cadet Coach Gary Steffen said. “Clayton did a good job of shutting Charles City down, and he was in command. We did a good job of making the routine plays on defense, and everyone contributed on offense.”
At the plate, Ollendieck tallied three hits, including one double, and had three runs batted in. Pecinovsky had three hits, including one double, three runs and one RBI. Hoppe had one hit and two RBI.
McAllister had two hits, two runs and one RBI. Vokaty had one hit and one run. Cuvelier had one hit and two runs. Sawyer Peckham and Colten Wiley each had one hit and one RBI. Kristian Szajna had one double. Zack Lane scored two runs.

Comets 9, Cadets 7 (G2)
In game two, Charles City broke a six-all tie game with three runs in the fifth to down the Cadets, 9-7.
“We allowed Charles City to get an early lead, and we made some mistakes on defense, which gave them extra outs,” Steffen said. “Offensively, we battled back to get in the game, but we can’t put ourselves in a hole early. Mentally, we need to do a better job of preparing for the second game of a doubleheader.”
McAllister and Wiley each had one hit and one run. Vokaty had one hit and one stolen base. Cuvelier scored one run.
Ollendieck tallied two hits and two RBI. Pecinovsky had one home run, two runs and one RBI. Jon Henry had two hits and one RBI. Szajna had one hit and two runs.

Osage 17, Cadets 15 (8 in)
The Osage Green Devils scored two runs each in the final three innings to defeat the Cadets, 17-15 in eight innings Thursday.
Crestwood tallied eight runs in the first to take an 8-1 lead, but Osage chipped away until it finally took the lead for good in the eighth.
“Our starting pitcher, Garret Ollendieck, did a good job of hitting the strike zone, but we didn’t make the plays we needed to make on defense,” Steffen said. “Osage chipped away at our early lead, got the big hit and extended innings when we made mistakes on defense.
“I give credit to Osage, but we also did a good job to battle back and tie the game at 15 (in the seventh). We had a chance to win the game in the seventh, but we didn’t get the job done. On the positive side, we’re scoring a lot of runs and hitting the ball very well. Our team batting average is .328. We just need to clean things up on defense, and we need more consistency on the mound,” the coach said.
McAllister finished with one hit, three runs and one RBI. Vokaty had two hits, one run and three RBI. Cuvelier had one double, two runs and one RBI.
Clayton Ollendieck had two hits and two runs. Pecinovsky had two hits and three runs. Ethan Hoppe had two hits and four RBI. Colten Wiley had one double, one run and one RBI. Colter Bye had one double and one run. Kristian Szajna had two hits and two runs.
Pecinovsky was the losing pitcher. He went four innings, allowed seven hits, four earned runs, two walks and struck out three. Garret Ollendieck went three innings, allowed five hits, two earned runs, three walks and struck out one.

Decorah 12, Cadets 2 (5 in)
In game one Friday, Decorah nabbed a 4-0 lead in the first inning and sailed to a 12-2 win in five innings.
Crestwood scored single runs in the second and third innings before the Vikes added four runs in the third and four in the fourth.
“In the first game, everything Decorah did worked well for them,” Steffen said. “We tried to battle back after they got the lead, but they kept adding to their lead. We did a good job of putting the ball in play on offense, but we couldn’t get the momentum.”
McAllister had one hit, one run and one stolen base. Vokaty tallied one RBI. Cuvelier, Jon Henry and Szajna each had one single. Pecinovsky had one hit, one run and one stolen base.
Cuvelier was the losing pitcher. He went three and two-thirds innings, allowed eight hits, 12 runs (eight earned), four walks and struck out one. Frank Hrdlicka went one-third of an inning and walked one.

Crestwood tallied nine hits, drew nine walks and had three stolen bases.
“Frank Hrdlicka did a good job on the mound,” Steffen said. “We hit the ball well, and MFL also helped us with six errors. It was good to see everyone contribute. It was nice to have a game where no one was on the edge of their seat.”

S.W. 10, Cadets 9 (10 in)
In the championship game Saturday, the Cadets rallied to score two runs in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extra innings, but South Winn bounced back with two runs each in the eighth and 10th innings to nip the Cadets, 10-9.
The game was tight, back-and-forth contest with each team answering after the other one scored. The South Winn Warriors held a 6-4 lead going into the bottom of the seventh before the Cadets rallied for two runs to tie the game at six. Clayton Ollendieck ripped a single to drive in two runs.
The Warriors tallied two runs in the top of the eighth before the Cadets scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game at eight.
South Winn tallied two runs in the top of the 10th to go ahead 10-8. Crestwood scored one run in the 10th when McAllister scored on a double steal with one out. The Warriors retired the next two batters to earn the win.
“It was frustrating to lose a game like this,” Steffen said. “Sometimes the ball bounces your way, and sometimes it doesn’t. Even though we lost, there are some good things we can take from the game. We had three eighth graders pitching (Carter Henry, Kade Munkel and Gabe Grabau), and they all threw the ball well. All three guys worked really hard during spring practices. They all did a great job on Saturday.
“Austin McAllister had a great game. Jon Henry also played well during the tournament. All of the guys are hitting the ball well. We just need to get the little things figured out,” Steffen said.
McAllister finished with five hits, scored five runs and had six stolen bases. Vokaty had one hit, one run and one RBI. Cuvelier had one run, one RBI and three stolen bases. Clayton Ollendieck had one hit and two RBI.
Pecinovsky had one double and one run. Wiley had one hit, one run and one RBI. Jon Henry had one hit.
Gabe Grabau was the losing pitcher. He tossed three innings in relief, allowed five hits, four earned runs, three walks and struck out three.
