Crestwood baseball team rallies past Eagles, NFV; falls to St. Ansgar

 

CRESCO - The Crestwood varsity baseball team opened the season on a solid note last week as the Cadets won two of three games.
Facing Clayton Ridge in the season opener May 23 at home, the Cadets fell behind 0-7 in the top of the third before rallying for five runs each in the third and fifth innings to earn a 10-7 win.
Playing Saint Ansgar at home May 24, the Cadets were unable to slow down the Saints as Saint Ansgar built an 8-0 lead and held on for a 10-5 victory.
Taking on North Fayette Valley May 25 on the road, the Cadets broke a six-all tie with five runs in the sixth en route to an 11-7 win over the Tigerhawks.
The Cadets (2-1) will host Osage June 1, play at Decorah June 2, and they will host the Crestwood Tourney on June 3 starting at 10 a.m.

Crestwood bounced back from a seven-run deficit to defeat Clayton Ridge, 10-7, May 23 at home in the season opener.
The Eagles tallied one run in the first and added six more runs in the top of the third to grab a 7-0 lead. Despite the big deficit, the Cadets refused to give up.
In the bottom of the third, the Cadets plated five runs to slice the Eagles’ lead to 7-5. With one out, Shane Vokaty singled and stole second. Austin McAllister drew a walk. Kristian Szajna laid down a perfect bunt for a single, and both Vokaty and McAllister scored on a Clayton Ridge throwing error. Zack Lane came in as a courtesy runner for Szajna. After Spencer Cuvelier was hit by a pitch, Lane scored on a double steal. Clayton Ollendieck drew a walk. With two outs, Colter Bye ripped a base hit to drive in Cuvelier and Ollendieck to cut Clayton Ridge’s lead to 7-5.
In the bottom of the fifth, Crestwood tacked on five runs to go ahead 10-7. Szajna, Cuvelier and Ollendieck all drew walks. Szajna scored on a wild pitch. Cuvelier scored on a double steal. Bye and Jon Henry both walked. Bryer Thompson came in to run for Henry. Ollendieck and Bye both scored on wild pitches. Sawyer Peckham hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Thompson to give the Cadets a 10-7 lead.
Kristian Szajna earned the win as he tossed four and one-third innings in relief, allowed six hits, no runs, one walk and struck out one. Starting pitcher Clayton Ollendieck went two and two-thirds innings, allowed one hit, six earned runs, six walks and struck out five.
Colter Bye had one single and two RBI. Shane Vokaty, Spencer Cuvelier and Kristian Szajna each tallied one single. Sawyer Peckham had one RBI. 
Cuvelier and Clayton Ollendieck each scored two runs. Vokaty, Austin McAllister, Zack Lane, Kristian Szajna, Bryer Thompson and Colter Bye each scored one run. Cuvelier and Vokaty each had two stolen bases. The Cadets drew seven walks.

    Saint Ansgar raced to an 8-0 lead in the fifth inning and held off a late charge by the Cadets to earn a 10-5 win May 24.
Crestwood scored three runs in the fifth and two runs in the sixth.
Austin McAllister scored one run and had one stolen base. Colten Wiley had one double and one run. Jon Henry and Zack Lane each scored one run. Shane Vokaty had one single and one run.
Ethan Hoppe was the losing pitcher. He went four innings, allowed seven hits, five runs (four earned), three walks and struck out two. Frank Hrdlicka tossed two and one-third innings, allowed no hits, two earned runs and struck out five. Austin McAllister pitched two-thirds of an inning, allowed one hit, three earned runs, four walks and struck out one.

Crestwood broke a tie game with five runs in the sixth on its way to an 11-7 win over North Fayette Valley May 25.
The Cadets trailed the Tigerhawks 3-5 after three innings before scoring three runs in the fourth to take a 6-5 lead. North Fayette Valley tied the game with one run in the bottom of the fourth before the Cadets exploded for five runs in the sixth.
Spencer Cuvelier tallied two hits, including one home run, and scored three runs. Shane Vokaty had two hits, two runs and two RBI. Trae Pecinovsky had three hits, including one double, two runs and two RBI.
Clayton Ollendieck had two hits, including one double, two runs and one RBI. Sawyer Peckham tallied one hit and two RBI. Ethan Hoppe had one hit and one run. Kristian Szajna had two hits, one run and one RBI. Austin McAllister had one hit.
Cuvelier was the winning pitcher. He went five and one-third innings, allowed 11 hits, seven runs (six earned), one walk and struck out four.
