NEW HAMPTON - Squaring off against a stout New Hampton squad on Sept. 11, the Crestwood volleyball team gave a solid effort before losing to the Chickasaws, 0-3 (14-25, 12-25, 15-25).
Playing at Clear Lake on Sept. 13, the Cadets rallied to beat the Lions, 3-2 (15-25, 25-19, 18-25, 25-23, 15-12). The win improved Crestwood’s overall record to 5-7.
Competing at the Waukon Tournament on Sept. 15, the Cadets won four of five matches, tying for third with Waukon. Crestwood downed Central (21-17, 21-13); bounced Dunkerton (21-12, 21-16); beat North Crawford (21-12, 22-20); defeated Turkey Valley (15-21, 21-10, 15-9); and the Cadets lost to MFL-Mar-Mac (21-15, 14-21, 11-15). Crestwood battled hard against New Hampton on Sept. 11, but the Chickasaws came out on top, 3-0.
“This match was an eye-opener for us,” Cadet Coach Robin Gossman said. “New Hampton is a very well-coached team. They are disciplined and educated about the game. Everything they run offensively is quick and deceptive.
“If a person just looked at the scores, it would appear that we rolled over and quit, but we did not. I was happy with the way the girls continued to battle. Our number one fault is our defense at the net. We must continue to put an emphasis on blocking,” the coach said.
Sharon Goodman led the Cadets with nine kills and had one block against the Chickasaws. Mikayla Lane had five kills. Laken Lienhard tallied 21 assists and completed seven of seven serves.
Memphis Sweeney had four digs and five kills. Ashley Voves posted three digs. Lexi Hoppe completed eight of nine serves and had one ace. Trista Foster completed seven of seven serves and had one ace.
C. Lake match
Gossman was excited to see the Cadets bounce back after falling behind early to Clear Lake.
“This was a very hard-fought win,” Gossman said. “We lost the first set in a big way, but the girls were able to fight back in set two. I thought that after set one we might give up but these ladies are fighters.
“Our defense at the net showed improvement so we are on our way. Serve reception was much better than Tuesday night giving us more offensive options. Clear Lake is a very good defensive team and does not let much hit the floor. This win was well-deserved,” Gossman said.
Sharon Goodman paced the Cadets with 23 kills, had four blocks, completed 12 of 13 serves and had one ace. Ashley Voves had 16 digs. Mikayla Lane tallied 10 kills and four blocks.
