Cadet girl harriers capture first at home, boys grab second

CRESCO -  The Crestwood girls’ and boys’ cross country teams flexed their muscles on Saturday at the Crestwood Invitational as the Cadet varsity girls’ team nabbed first place with 26 points while the Crestwood varsity boys’ squad took second place with 54 points.
In the Junior Varsity races, Crestwood earned a clean sweep as the Cadet girls’ and boys’ teams both captured first. The girls’ team scored 17 points while the boys’ squad tallied 23 points.
Six Crestwood varsity girl runners finished in the top 15 to earn medals. Ellie Friesen led the way as she took first place in a time of 18 minutes, 50 seconds. Other Cadet medalists included: 2. Cassidy Ihns 19:34; 4. Hope Dohlman 20:39; 8. Brynn Bodermann 22:09; 11. Rachel Steffen 22:20; 12. Emily Friesen 22:24. Cadet junior Sarah Mashek placed 18th in 22:59.
In the varsity boys’ race, three Cadets captured medals by finishing in the top 15. Nathan Martinek was third in 18:09, Bryden Juelsgaard took sixth in 18:34 and Carlos Beascochea was ninth in 19:13.
In the JV boys’ race, seven Cadets finished in the top 10 including: Colter Bye (second), Lucas McGee (third), Kyle Quam (fifth), Kaden Anderlik (sixth), Jon Millage (seventh), Matthew Slifka (ninth) and Justin Nibaur (10th).
The JV girls’ race saw six Cadets place in the top 10 including: Annie Mast (first), Libby Labosky (second), Sami Bigalk (third), Katie Saner (fourth), Mattie Slavin (seventh), Destiny Hodges (ninth).
Crestwood’s Junior High harriers also performed well on Saturday. The Cadet boys’ team took second with 55 points while the girls’ team placed third with 77 points. Ethan Govern finished third for Crestwood in the boys’ race in 12:51.
Cadet Head Coach Jim Obermann praised all the Crestwood runners for battling hard on Saturday.
“We try to make our home meet special,” Obermann said. “Our JV and Varsity girls’ teams really prepared well and attacked the course well. By running our Varsity and JV girls in the same race, that created team unity for us. Having both teams finish first really speaks to the depth on the girls’ teams.
“Ellie ran a great race and had an excellent time (18:50) on a challenging course. I thought Brynn Bodermann and Rachel Steffen both ran their best races of the year. Annie Mast and Libby Labosky both ran well in the JV races. It was nice to win the team championship against some good teams. To win (the JV and Varsity) team titles convincingly was pleasing to see,” Obermann said.
The coach also gave credit to the JV and Varsity boys’ teams for their hard work.
“Our JV boys’ team ran as well as it has run all year, and I think that was because of our depth,” Obermann said. “The Varsity boys’ team also ran its strongest race of the year. It was great to see Nathan Martinek and Ryan Steffen competing (after missing the past few meets because of injuries). Nathan gave a courageous effort, and he showed great toughness. Ryan ran a great race, too.
“Bryden Juelsgaard had his best race of the year, and Carlos Beascochea competed well. Garret Ollendieck is showing that he is a legitimate cross country runner, and he strengthens our team.
“We are very appreciative of the Cresco Country Club for allowing us to use their course for the meet. It is an excellent course to run on. We are also thankful for the great fan support at the meet,” Obermann said.
The Cadet cross country teams will compete at New Hampton on Oct. 5 at 4:30 p.m. and at the NEIC Meet in Waukon on Oct. 10 at 4 p.m. The State Qualifier Meet will be on Oct. 19.
