Cadet boys' track team nabs third at Osage

OSAGE - Despite the cold and windy weather, the Crestwood boys’ track team competed well last Tuesday at the Osage Invitational as the Cadets nabbed third place with 91.5 points.
Competing at the Dave Sage Go-Hawk Relays Friday in Waverly, the Cadets placed sixth overall with 72 points.
Osage meet
Crestwood senior Spencer Cuvelier captured gold in the discus with a toss of 150 feet, 9 inches, and he placed second in the 200 dash in 23.80 seconds.
Chris Guest took second in the 100 dash in 12.14 seconds, and he placed third in the 110 hurdles in 17.04. Michael Mashek placed second in the 3200 in 11:00.63, and he took third in the 1600 in 5:04.34. Austin McAllister was second in the long jump at 19 feet.
“All-in-all, I thought all of the guys competed well and aggressively for our first outdoor meet of the season,” Cadet Coach Chris Lentz said. “The guys showed they were competitors, and they did some good things.
“Raymond Himli had a personal record in the long jump (18 feet, 4.5 inches), and he was excited about that. Spencer Cuvelier performed well in the discus, and he’s on the bubble in terms of qualifying for the Drake Relays. He might need to record a throw in the mid-150 foot range. Austin McAllister is also close to qualifying (for Drake) in the long jump.
“Overall, I was pleased with the way our guys performed at Osage. We still need to mix and match guys in the relay events and work on the handoffs, but the guys are running well,” Lentz said.
The Cadets will compete at MFL-MM on April 13 and at Decorah on April 17.

Waverly meet
Crestwood’s Spencer Cuvelier and Chris Guest both grabbed gold Friday in Waverly. Cuvelier won the discus event with a throw of 145 feet, 7 inches. Guest won the 400 hurdles event in a time of 59.44.
Michael Mashek took second in the 3200 in a time of 10:39.59. Dayton Swatek was fourth in the 400 dash in 57.36. The 4x100 team placed fourth in 47.58 seconds.
“We are still mixing and matching in the relays, and we still need to work on our handoffs,” Coach Lentz said. “We’re looking for the best combination on relays, but I think we’ve got some potential.
“Chris Guest ran a good race in the 400 hurdles to take first place. He runs hard and smooth over the hurdles. Spencer Cuvelier also threw well enough to win the discus. We still need more practice overall, but we’re still in the early stage of the year.
“Spencer Cuvelier (discus), Austin McAllister (long jump) and Michael Mashek (3200) are all on the bubble for potentially qualifying for the Drake Relays. We’re also hoping Chris Guest might have a chance for Drake in the 400 hurdles,” Lentz said.
The final qualifying date for the Drake Relays is April 20. The Drake Relays will be held in Des Moines from April 26-29.
