William ‘Bill’ Nicoll, 78

CHESTER - William “Bill” LeRoy Nicoll, age 78 of Chester, Iowa, passed away on Jan. 16, 2023 in his shop, doing what he loved . . . fixing things and taking care of his family. 

A private family service will be held at a later date. 

Bill was born in Lime Springs, Iowa on Feb. 18, 1944, to Alfred L. Nicoll and Morna E. (Foote) Nicoll. He attended school in Lime Springs and graduated from Crestwood in Cresco, Iowa in 1962. He then attended Universal Trade School in Omaha, Neb., where he graduated with a degree in Auto Mechanics. On June 24, 1966, he married the love of his life, Vernelle Haugen at Lincoln Lutheran Church in Ridgeway, Iowa. To this union, a daughter and son were born. 

Bill retired from Howard County, where he drove snowplows and did mechanic work at the Cresco shop.

He was a beloved father, husband, papa and the strongest person his family knew. He can never be replaced, and he will always be remembered. Thanks Dad!

Bill is survived by his wife of 56 years, Vernelle; his children, Tammie (Robert) Kappes and Terry (Staci) Nicoll; grandchildren, Megan (Brandon) Riha, Tucker (Megan) Speer, Kyle Nicoll, Collin Nicoll and Kaylee (Dawson) Gosch; great-grandchildren, Emma Riha, Jack Riha, Will Riha and Forrest Speer; step-grandchildren, Tyler (Kelsey) Kappes, Kayla (Andrew) Beyer and Shania (Jim) Kappes; step-great-grandchildren, Sawyer, Boe and Lane Kappes and Wyatt and LoEtta Beyer; sister, Jean Bailey; brothers-in-law, Maynard Haugen, and Randy (Darrelleen) Lewis; along with several nieces and nephews.
