Marlene Georgiann Jirak was born on July 15, 1946, the daughter of Adolph and Mary (Kuhn) Jirak in Cresco. She attended Notre Dame High School and, after graduation, studied to become a teacher for a couple semesters. Marlene decided teaching was not the occupation for her, and moved to Rochester, Minn. to begin working as a nurse’s aide at St. Marys Hospital. She went on to work for Donaldson Company in Cresco, retiring after 35 years.
On Oct. 29, 1966, Marlene was united in marriage to Lynn Wemark at Assumption Catholic Church. Their relationship began four years prior by a snowball that Marlene threw at Lynn. The snowball hit its intended target, and the couple was together ever since.
They shared a love of fishing and spent many years fishing in Minnesota, Canada and Black Hawk on the Mississippi River. Marlene could be found with a blue spinner, a leech with a mile of line out at the back of the boat. When they lived on the farm, she liked to burn brush and garbage, and throw on anything else that would burn.
For Christmas one year, her children gifted a golden lab puppy named Goldie to Lynn. Goldie ended up becoming Marlene’s dog. She was not overjoyed by the gift, but soon enough had a big yellow shadow following her around the farm. Marlene liked to make oyster stew for her husband and cinnamon rolls, kolaches, pie and potato salad. She enjoyed crocheting and pickling as a hobby.
Marlene was a devout Catholic. She made sure her family always went to church, no matter where they were. This tradition she created with her family showed her pure determination, but along with her stubborn spirit, she had a tender heart. Her heart showed through every year for Christmas as she decked the halls, and made it a special day with her large gift sacks filled for her children and grandchildren. Marlene was always early to her Grandchildren’s events; whether it was for concerts or sporting events so she could sit in the front row.
Marlene is survived by her husband, Lynn; children, Beth (Duane) Albertson of Spillville, Iowa, Jill (Andrew) Lensing of Ridgeway, Iowa and Jamie (Alicia) Wemark of Ridgeway; eight grandchildren, Rachael (Kevin) Andera, Sara (Logan) Einck, Eric (Alicia) Albertson, Adam Lensing, Joshua Lensing, Henry Lensing, Lucas Wemark and Lance Wemark; eight great-grandchildren; siblings, Richard (Joyce) Jirak of Cresco, Camella Schmitt of Cresco and Dorothy (Charles) O’Brien of Stewartville, Minn.; and sister-in-law, Eileen Jirak.
She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Gordon Jirak, Elaine (John) Means and Alma Mae Jirak; and brother-in-law, Lester Schmitt.
