Kirk Gunhus, 64

FORMERLY OF CRESCO - Kirk Gunhus, age 64, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, April 24, 2023, after a courageous battle with cancer. 

Services will be held on Wednesday, May 3, 2023, at 11 a.m. at First Lutheran Church in Cresco, Iowa (920 3rd St E,). A visitation will be held on Wednesday from 9-10:45 a.m. at the church. The Erickson Funeral Home in Darlington is serving the family. Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco is handling local services and burial in Iowa. 

Kirk was born on March 25, 1959, to Duane and Gelene (Peter) Gunhus in Cresco. He graduated from Crestwood High School in Cresco, with the Class of 1977. Following high school, he worked in the underground construction field until he was hired at the Iowa Department of Transportation in Decorah, Iowa where he worked until his retirement in 2015. 

In 2017, Kirk moved to Mineral Point, Wis. to be with his fiancé, Virginia (Ginny) Burbach. Shortly after he moved, he began working for Ace Hardware in Darlington, Wis.

Kirk enjoyed spending time with his son Dustin and going to NASCAR races, dirt track races and demolition derbies around the area. All of his life, he had an avid love of hunting, trapping and fishing. 

Kirk is survived by his son, Dustin (Michelle) Gunhus and their family in Elkton, Minn.; his mother, Gelene Gunhus of Cresco; his sister, Lori (Linus) Balik of Cresco; his nephew, Austin (Brittney) Balik of Marion, Iowa; his niece, Mandy (Aaron) Blau of Lisbon, Iowa; and five great-nieces and nephews, Adelynn, Olivia and Carter Balik and Jordan and Hannah Blau. 

He was preceded in death by his father, Duane Gunhus in 2009.
