Lime Springs - Janice D. Schmitt, age 77, of Lime Springs, Iowa, died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2017, at home surrounded by her family.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, 2017, at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Cresco, Iowa, with Father Dennis Cain officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Cresco. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1, at Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home, Cresco. Visitation will continue an hour prior to the time of service Saturday at the church.

Janice Darlene Rosendahl was born on May 12, 1940, in Calmar, Iowa to Herman and Leona Rosendahl. She attended St. Aloysius Catholic Grade School and graduated in 1958 from Calmar High School. She married LaVern Schmitt on June 18, 1958, at St. Aloysius Church in Calmar.

LaVern was drafted into the Army in 1958, where he served eight-and-a-half years. Janice went with him to Seaside, Calif., then to Kileen, Texas, where their son, Bryan, was born. Then they moved to Ft. Atkinson, Iowa and daughter, Julie, was born. In 1963, they moved to Cresco. For 12 years Janice worked for Dr. Donald Maland’s office at the Cresco Medical Clinic. After Dr. Maland retired, she began working in the office for Crestwood Junior High School. 

She was not afraid of hard work and helped on the farm any way she could. During harvest, Janice could be seen hauling grain with the semi. She enjoyed her vegetable garden, flowers and keeping up on yard work. She also liked canning, crocheting, sewing and crafting. But she enjoyed reading the most and was an avid reader. She especially loved spending time with her grandsons. 

Janice belonged to the Cresco Red Hat Society, Regional Health Services Hospital Auxiliary, Howard County Farm Bureau Women’s Committee, Mobile Food Pantry volunteer and Notre Dame Circles of Faith. She and LaVern enjoyed wintering in south Texas for 19 years. They made many close friends at their park in Mercedes, Texas.

Janice is survived by her husband of 59 years, LaVern; son, Bryan (Betty) Schmitt of Cresco; daughter, Julie (Mike) Pfeffer of Grand Rapids, Minn.; two grandsons, Adam Schmitt of Cresco and Eric (Heidi) Schmitt of Algona, Iowa; two stepgrandsons, Mitchell (Kayla) Pfeffer of Gibbon, Minn. and Trent (Samantha Klitzke) Pfeffer of Chanhassen, Minn.; sister, Carolee (Norman) Oberheu of Denver, Iowa; and brother, Dennis (Mary Ann) Rosendahl of Des Moines, Iowa.

Janice was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Leona Rosendahl, and infant daughter, Lisa Dawn Schmitt.
