CHESTER - Gail Cleveland, age 101, of Chester, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2019 at Accura HealthCare of Cresco, Iowa.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, Oct. 24 at Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco. Burial was at Greenwood Cemetery in rural Nashua, Iowa.
Gail Lucille Cleveland was born on Oct. 10, 1918 to Van and Lena (Jones) Bonwell in Nashua. She attended country school near Colwell, completing the eighth grade.
On Oct. 18, 1939, Gail married Loren Cleveland in Charles City, Iowa. To this union five children were born. They raised their family in rural Cherry Grove, Minn. and around the LeRoy, Minn. area.
Her days were filled with the duties of a farm wife and mother. She raised milk cows, pigs and chickens, planted a large garden, canned vegetables and had a beautiful strawberry patch. She was a wonderful cook, making homemade noodles for her famous chicken noodle soup. Christmas time included plenty of holiday baking, as she filled ice cream pails with her homemade candies to share with her family.
Gail and Loren loved to go fishing. Their favorite fishing spot for bullheads was near Faribault, Minn. They enjoyed playing cards, especially 500, trips to the boat in Marquette, Iowa for a day of gambling and an occasional stop for Bingo in La Crescent, Minn.
Gail was a member of the Chester United Methodist Church. She enjoyed being a member of the community and was known for her kind and giving heart. She truly enjoyed her time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Family was always an important part of her life.
Survivors include her four children, Gary (Betty) Cleveland of Thornton, Iowa, Sharon (Leo) Armstrong of Dexter, N.M., Sheryl (Jim) Koster of LeRoy and Larry (Audrey) Cleveland of Decorah, Iowa; 21 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; 30 great-great-grandchildren; and three great-great-great-grandchildren.
Gail was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Loren in 1988; son, Rodney in infancy; granddaughter, Karmen; and several brothers and sisters.
