CRESCO - Francis “Frank” McConnell, age 84, of Cresco, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Feb. 16, 2022, at his home surrounded by his family.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at Notre Dame Catholic Church on Saturday, Feb. 26, 2022, at 11 a.m., with Father Jacob Rouse officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery following mass. 
Visitation will be held at Notre Dame Catholic Church on Friday, Feb. 25, 2022, from 3-7 p.m., with a rosary prior to visitation at 2:30 p.m. and a parish scripture service at 7 p.m. Visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to the service, beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Francis John McConnell was born on Dec. 13, 1937, the son of Thomas and Elizabeth (McCormick) McConnell on a farm in Winneshiek County, Iowa. He graduated from Notre Dame Catholic High School with the class of 1956. Frank was united in marriage to Mary Samec on June 23, 1962, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Cresco. They were blessed with four children. 
Throughout the years, Frank worked in the feed milling business. He operated a portable mill for Erdahl’s Hatchery and was employed by Cargill and John’s Feed and Supply in Cresco. After retirement, he worked part-time for H&S Motors. Frank also farmed with his son, Brad, for over 20 years and sold the farm to him and his wife. 
He loved attending all his grandchildren’s activities and sporting events. He was so proud of every one of them. To keep from getting cabin fever during the COVID pandemic, the couple liked to take daily car rides.
Frank is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary McConnell of Cresco; daughter, Laurie (Craig) Ollendieck of Cresco; sons, Brian (Jill) McConnell of Cresco, Bruce (Kim) McConnell of Cresco and Brad (Amy) McConnell of Cresco; grandchildren, Clayton and Garret Ollendieck, Molly (Troy) Tweten and Elle McConnell, Andy, Austin and Ashton McConnell and Talon and Torie McConnell; sisters-in-law, Shirley McConnell of Cresco and Arlene Kruchek of Dunkerton, Iowa; brothers-in-law, Frank (Marion) Samec of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Art (Donna) Samec of Jesup, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Mary Jane (Leonard) McCabe, Eddie (Margaret) McConnell, Lucian (Millie) McConnell, William “Roger” McConnell and Jim McConnell; father and mother-in-law, Frank and Alice Samec; sister-in-law, Helen (Clarence) Sorensen; and brothers-in-law Edward Samec and Jerry Kruchek.
