Evelyn Jean Truka was born in Mitchell County, Iowa, on July 3, 1934, the daughter of Kenneth and Helen (Hennessey) Beck. She and her parents moved several times during her childhood before settling on a farm in rural Howard County.
On Oct. 29, 1951, Evelyn was united in marriage to Leland Truka at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. They farmed in Howard County, where they raised their six children.
Evelyn was involved in local, church and community activities. She loved having coffee with her friends. She did a lot of crocheting and embroidery, making baby blankets for all of her 23 great-grandchildren.
Evelyn was devoted to family, faith and community. She was a dedicated daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grand- mother. She always felt dutiful, not expecting reward or acknowledgement for herself. She valued tradition and dedication. She never demanded anything for herself; she always avoided extravagance and self-indulgence and prized self-sufficiency. She had a strong belief in the good of others.
Evelyn loved being with others working on a common goal or celebration. She had a quiet, witty sense of humor that was keen and warm, but not demeaning. Often in times of trial and difficulty, she found humor and focused on the bright aspects. She loved rural life, beautiful flowers, sunrises and sunsets. She enjoyed watching the birds out the window (but not the squirrels, raccoons and deer eating the birdseed). She had a strong will and determination. She was an organized person with attention to detail and could turn things of no value into something very useful.
Evelyn is survived by two daughters, Christina (Steve Sautter) Truka of Aurora, Colo. and Roxanne Kraft of Cresco; four sons, Joseph (Jane) Truka and James (Lori) Truka, both of Lime Springs, Kenneth (Dawn) Truka of Mason City, Iowa and David (Brenda) Truka of Swisher, Iowa; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; a sister, Shirley Frana of Waterloo, Iowa; and two brothers, Duane (Lavonne) Beck of Cresco and Tom Beck of Lime Springs.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leland on Dec. 30, 2005.
