SARATOGA - Doris Alpha Buresh, age 97, of Saratoga, Iowa passed away peacefully on Nov. 8 at Wellington Place Care Center in Decorah, Iowa.
Visitation will be on Thursday, Nov. 14 from 5-8 p.m. at Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco, Iowa and one hour prior to her services at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 15 at Saratoga Community Church. Memorials may be directed to her family.
Doris was born on Sept. 26, 1922 in Moorland, Iowa, the daughter of Andrew and Josephine Knudson. She was baptized and confirmed at the Roelyn Lutheran Church and graduated from Moorland High School in 1940. She worked as a “hired girl” for area families, doing housework and taking care of their children, especially after the birth of a new baby.
The following year, she moved to northeast Iowa to the village of Saratoga, where she met the love of her life, Victor Buresh, while she was working at Kakac’s General Store. They were married on Oct. 18, 1942 on the Buresh family farm, where they lived for the next 35 years. To this union was born three children, Richard, Rosalie and Tom. In 1968 they adopted their daughter, Dawn to make their family complete.
Doris always had a big vegetable garden at the farm, strawberry beds and flowers all around the yard. Every Saturday was bakery day, when she would make her delicious cinnamon rolls and kolaches, then invite family and friends over in the afternoon for coffee and her mouth-watering treats. She was a member of Saratoga Presbyterian Church all her adult life, where she taught Sunday School and was active in Presbyterian Women for many years.
In 1977, the Bureshes retired and moved into Saratoga. They loved to have neighbors and friends over for a game of cards or dice and always a cup of hot coffee. Doris always sewed over the years, from Barbie doll clothes to the many quilts for her family and for church missions projects. Recipients especially loved the many jean quilts she made. She was also Vic’s best assistant to help finish all the wooden creations they made for their family and friends for gifts.
In 2012 Doris and Vic moved together to Cresco Assisted Living Center, where they celebrated their 70th anniversary with family and friends. Vic died on Aug. 25, 2013. In 2017 Doris made another move to Wellington Care Center in Decorah to be near her family and spend the last days of her life.
Doris is survived by her children, Richard (Kathy) Buresh of Mission, Texas, Rosalie (Bill) Creamer of Kissimmee, Fla., Tom (Connie) Buresh of Decorah and Dawn (John) Snider of Shamrock, Texas; 10 grandchildren, Scott (Kathleen) Buresh, Chris (Kristine) Buresh, Brent (Rachael) Buresh, Karri (Dale) Rutledge, Amanda (Greg) Grimm, Colleen (Mike Schultz) Creamer, Charlotte (Don) Fowler, Stasi Dubbels, Cana Friend and Harrison Dubbels; 19 great-grandchildren; and her brother, Richard (Kathleen) Knudson.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Victor; and her siblings, Harold, Howard, Elmer, Melvin, Ruth, Lester, Vernon, Kenneth and Dorothy Jean.
