CRESCO - Donna Jean Groth, age 84, of Cresco, Iowa died Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2017 at Evans Memorial Home in Cresco. 

Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 29, 2017 at St. Paul’s Maple Leaf Lutheran Church, with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Friday from 1:30 p.m. until time of services. Lindstrom Funeral Home is assisting the family. 

 

Donna was born Aug. 11, 1933 in Afton Township, near Elma, Iowa to Edith (Flugge) and Norbert Groth, tipping the scales at one-and-a-half pounds. She slept in a shoe box on the oven door and was fed with an eye dropper. Norbert was known to carry her around in his pocket. She was baptized Aug. 25, 1933 at home and was confirmed Sept. 12, 1948 at St. Paul’s Maple Leaf Lutheran Church.

She lived in Saratoga, Bussey, Riceville, Monona, Earlville, Ames and Elma, all in Iowa, while her dad taught school. They moved to their farm near Elma in 1949.

She graduated from Riceville High School in 1952 and attended Wartburg College and Hamilton Business School in Mason City, Iowa. Donna lived with her parents on the farm until they all moved to Cresco in 1988.

She enjoyed china painting, gardening, playing cards with her cousins and numerous church activities. She was a “fireball” with an infectious laugh. On numerous occasions she threatened to whip family members with a “wet noodle” if things didn’t go her way. She moved to Evans Home in November 2015.

She is survived by her cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Edith in 1994 and Norbert in 1997.
