CRESCO - Donald Breitsprecher, age 83, of Cresco, Iowa passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2017 at Accura HealthCare of Cresco.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 30, 2017 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco, followed by burial in Burr Oak Cemetery in Burr Oak, Iowa. Family and friends may call on Friday, Dec. 29, 2017 from 4-7 p.m. at Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco and on Saturday at the church from 10 a.m. until time of services.
Don was born July 23, 1934 on the family farm in Winneshiek County to Raymond and Martha (Tinderholt) Breitsprecher. He was baptized at Stavanger Lutheran Church in Ossian, Iowa and confirmed at Burr Oak Lutheran Church. He graduated from Canton High School in Canton, Minn. in 1953. Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army.
He married Sara J. Ness on Nov. 29, 1958; they later divorced. Don farmed in the Burr Oak area for many years until he and his family moved to Cresco in the mid-1960s, where he continued to farm and sell seed corn. In the 1980s, he retired from farming. He worked as a mail hauler and at Bethany Housewares, but continued to be active in farming by helping his family and friends.
Don was a member of the VFW and American Legion. He restored 1953 and 1967 John Deere tractors due to his love of John Deere. He enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, playing cards and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Don’s wit and humor was known and appreciated by all who knew him.
Don is survived by four daughters, Cindy (Ken) Carruth of Rochester, Minn., Janet (Rod Ollendieck) Smith of Ridgeway, Iowa, Susan Kratz of Waukon, Iowa and Vicki (Ehab) Michael of Sarasota, Fla.; 12 grandchildren, Jerry Miller, Steven Miller, Tyler Carruth, Cole Carruth, Luke Carruth, Jessica Smith, Jason Smith, Christopher Smith, Angela Breitsprecher, Alex Kratz, Brett Kratz and Jonathan Michael; eight great-grandchildren; two siblings, DiAnn (Eugene) Burri of Rochester and Alan (Rose) Breitsprecher of Decorah, Iowa; and a sister-in-law, Donna Breitsprecher of Rushford, Minn.
Don was preceded in death by his parents and by two brothers, James Breitsprecher and Kenneth Breitsprecher.
