Formerly of Chester - Clarence Smid, age 94, formerly of Chester, Iowa, died April 11, 2017 in Cedar Falls Health Care Center in Cedar Falls, Iowa, where he had moved five years ago to be closer to his daughter.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
Clarence, youngest child of George and Frauka (Koop) Smid, was born Jan. 9, 1923 in Kamrar, Iowa. He graduated from Blairsburg High School in 1940 and married Ferne Gabrielson on March 29, 1945.
He had farmed for many years in Chester, after moving there in 1958 from his boyhood farm home in Kamrar. The couple enjoyed square dancing for many years and attended Chester Methodist Church.
Clarence is survived by three children, Gene (Sue) of Merrill, Iowa, Linda (Chip) Schmidt of Cedar Falls and Dave (Lesley) of Marshalltown, Iowa. He also had four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ferne, who passed away in 2005; brothers, William and Edward; and sisters, Harmka, Ethel and Gertrude.
