Winona, Minn. - Bernard “Bernie” Dahl, age 79, of Winona, Minn. and formerly of Rollingstone, Minn. died Sunday, Sept. 10 at Lake Winona Manor surrounded by family.
Memorial services were Sept. 15 at Central Lutheran Church in Winona, with burial of Cremains at Holy Trinity Cemetery, Rollingstone. Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco, Iowa handled the arrangements.
Bernard C. Dahl was born June 4, 1938 in Minneapolis, Minn. to Sever and Anna (Olson) Dahl. He attended school in Bloomington, Minn.
Bernie served in the Army National Guard and Army Reserve for several years and was honorably discharged in 1963.
He married Carolyn Holmes on June 19, 1965 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Watertown, Minn. Following school, he drove school bus in the Bloomington area prior to moving to Eau Claire, Wis., where he started his career with Greyhound Lines as a ticket and travel agent.
Later Bernie was a cook at Ginny’s Supper Club in Rollingstone, worked at North Star Foods in St. Charles, Minn. and Lakeside Foods in Plainview, Minn. During retirement he worked at Walmart.
Bernie enjoyed his Minnesota Vikings, model railroad collection, model classic cars collection, fishing, camping and spending time with his family. He enjoyed cooking at community and family events. He built model railroad platforms with his friend, Charlie Wathke. Bernie was always known for having cooked enough food for twice as many people as expected at any event. He had a love for decorating, it didn’t matter what season or holiday, he would always be decorating.
While living in Osseo, Wis. and Rollingstone, Bernie and his neighbors would take any opportunity to decorate each other’s yards, cars, trees and houses for birthdays and pranks that included hanging bicycles in trees and turning cars sideways in the garage. Sometimes Bernie would come home to find Packer gear on his TV antennas, because his friends all knew he was afraid of heights. One of his last more enjoyable activities was starting the “Moonlighters” social group at Lake Winona Manor.
Bernie is survived by a son, Tim (Kelly) Dahl of Lewiston, Minn. and a daughter, Annette (Rod) Trachta of Cresco; three grandchildren, Blake Dahl, Caleb (Julie) Dahl and Whitney Dahl; a sister, Mary (Doug) Larson of Santa Cruz, Calif.; and sister-in-law, Phyllis Dahl of Savage, Minn.; along with close friends, Vern Trachta, Celeste Trachta, Bev Durnen, Diane Wathke and his cat, Friske.
Bernie was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Carolyn; brother, John; and his friend, Charlie Wathke.
