Thanking law enforcement

—National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day was Jan. 9

CRESCO - Second grade students at Notre Dame Elementary decided to do something nice for individuals who do something nice for them every day of the year.
Jan. 9 was National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day, and the students in Sue Balk and Sheila Slifka’s classes colored some paper sacks and stuffed them full of  goodies to present to their local heroes, law enforcement officers.
Also in their sacks was a note telling police officers and sheriff’s deputies how the children feel.
“Thank you to all you do!
“Our definition of a hero is someone who protects our world and continues to make it a better place, despite having to see its darkest aspects every day. Our hero courageously puts on his or her badge each day and sacrifices more daily than most do in an entire lifetime.
“We see you, we appreciate you and you truly are a hero!
“We have studied about another type of hero. Saints are those who have gone before us and are role models and our friends in heaven. St. Michael, the archangel, is the patron saint of those in law enforcement. He was the leader of God’s angels and became the  champion of loyalty to God. We will pray for you and your safety and ask for St. Michael to watch over you, your fellow officers and your family.
“From your second grade friends at Notre Dame Catholic School”
Howard County Sheriff Mike Miner thanked the kids on behalf of all law enforcement officers, “We are dedicated to making it a better community for you.”
Local law enforcement officers include:
• Howard County Sheriff’s Department: Sheriff Mike Miner and deputies Tim Beckman, Darwin Kueker, Ryan VanDeWalker, Milan Grubl, Shane Thornsten, Richard Hollenbeck, Sam Fotiadis and Jennifer Bauer (civil deputy)
• Communications/Jailers: Sandi Lybbert, Rita Roberts, Jessica Gesell, Cathy Cleveland, Michelle Kuhn and Becky Hodges
