A sweet fundraiser for a good cause

CRESCO - In a follow-up to a story published in the December 17th edition of the Times Plain Dealer, the candy cane tree on North Elm Street in front of Fareway in Cresco has now been taken down. What began as a seasonal decoration became a visible, interactive campaign that drew families, shoppers and local groups together in support of Kessel Kids. Community members were invited to add any candy cane over 12 inches to the tree, and for each candy cane placed, Cresco Motor Company committed to donate $10 to Kessel Kids. When the candy canes were taken down and counted, the tree held 280 candy canes producing a $2,800 donation to the organization that supports local children. Owner of The Cresco Motor Company, Quentin Vsetecka explained the fundraiser’s origin, saying he’d “seen something about a hula hoop tree,” and that seeing a candycane fence inspired him to combine that idea with the hula hoop tree concept he’d found online — and the candy cane tree fundraiser was born.
The display not only raised funds but also created a sense of shared purpose and holiday cheer, attracting foot traffic and conversation in the downtown area. Cresco Motor Company thanked everyone who contributed, and Kessel Kids will be receiving a meaningful boost to its programming and services. The success of this playful, community-driven fundraiser demonstrates how simple, creative ideas can generate strong local support and tangible benefits for children in need.
