Slifka is Officer of Year

—West Des Moines give native the honor
WEST DES MOINES - Police Officer Kyle Slifka was awarded the Officer of the Year by the Noon Optimist Club of West Des Moines on Tuesday, July 20, 2021.
Slifka, son of Steve and Sheila Slifka of Cresco, has been with the West Des Moines Police Department after graduating from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy in December 2016. He was a night shift patrol officer for the first two years of his career and in 2019 was selected for a career specialty position as a Traffic Unit Officer. 
Officer Slifka serves as an Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE) officer, Standard Field Sobriety Test (SFST) Instructor, Drug Recognition Expert (DRE), and technical collision/reconstruction investigator handling serious injury or fatal motor vehicle crashes. 
He attended and graduated from Northwestern School of Public Safety for Traffic Collision Investigation Level I and Technical Collision Investigation Level II in 2019. 
In 2020, Officer Slifka again graduated from Northwestern School of Public Safety for an additional certification as a Traffic Crash Reconstruction and Crash Data Retrieval Technician/Analyst. He is also a bike patrol officer receiving his certification from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy in 2019.
Officer Slifka assists with instructing new officers at the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy on the proper policy and procedures for impaired driving in addition to (Operating While Intoxicated) OWI scenarios. He was nominated by his command staff to attend the 2018 Lifesavers Conference in San Antonio, Texas which is for selected officers who have shown a true dedication to roadway and traffic safety.  
In addition, Officer Slifka is a current member of the Central Iowa Traffic Safety Task Force (CITSTF) and initiates traffic safety projects for the City of West Des Moines. 
In 2020, Officer Slifka wrote a Department of Justice grant for the West Des Moines Police Department which was approved and awarded the department with $40,000 to be used for equipment. 
Slifka is marrid to Steph, and the couple has one son, Weston.
