RHS offers 3D Mammography

CRESCO - Regional Health Services of Howard County now offers Genius 3D Mammography to its patients.
The new machine, unveiled earlier this month, ‘provides better, earlier breast cancer detection compared to 2D alone. It finds 20-65 percent more invasive breast cancers than 2D mammography alone’, according to an informational pamphlet provided by Regional Health Services.
Mindy Balk, R.T. (R) (M) (CT) and Director of Radiology at Regional Health Services, said patients are complimentary of the new service.
“This is brand new, state of the art technology; a piece of equipment that is going to give us much more accurate mammograms with patients," she said. “An original mammogram is a two-dimensional image of a three-dimensional piece of tissue. With the new machine, we take multiple images and see things smaller and detect them faster and there aren’t issues with overlapping dense breasts.”
She continued, “We started this Aug. 7 and have had a tremendous response from the public, for which I am thankful. The majority of patients have had the exam and say it feels like the compression is significantly less than in the past, making the exam more comfortable. We use pads on the machine to make it warmer and softer. This is a good service for our community.”
Whitney Voss, R.T. (R) (M) and Mammographer said, “We have had great feedback from patients on how comfortable it is.”
Ultrasonographer Laura Hubka said, “ I personally had one done and I can say it feels like less compression.”
Balk said the Radiology Department is raising funds to buy a paddle with a curved surface rather than a flat surface to further add to the comfort level of mammograms.
“We are planning an evening Glow Run 5K on Oct. 12 and a raffle,” she said.
Balk advises women to speak with their doctors about at what age they should begin receiving mammograms, as opinions vary in the medical field.
“The goal is that if we find something, we find it more quickly when it’s small and make it more treatable,” she said. “This new machine definitely changes how this exam feels for a woman.”
