Helen Pauline Kolind was born Oct. 7, 1921 in Albert Lea, Minn. to Peter and Ella (Stoa) Kolind. The family moved to Cresco in 1930 when they purchased the Cresco Greenhouses. Pauline graduated from Cresco High School in 1938 and attended what was then Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa, earning a two-year teaching degree.
She married Arnold Kubalsky on Jan. 3, 1942 in Cresco. They lived in Minnesota where she taught school until the birth of their son. They returned to Cresco in 1954, when she and Arnie moved from Dodge Center, Minn., to purchase the greenhouse from her parents. They ran the business until selling and retiring in 1980.
Pauline was a lifelong Lutheran. She was confirmed and married in the First Lutheran Church and resumed membership when the family moved to Cresco. She was involved in many community groups and was an active member of the Cresco Country Club, where she played golf into her later years and was still attending ladies’ night activities this spring.
Pauline loved to travel. She and Arnie traveled during retirement, and she took advantage of several VIP bank trips. She was proud to say she’d been in all 50 states and a few foreign countries.
Prior to entering Evans home, Pauline resided in Cresco Assisted Living for nine years. She enjoyed the friends she made there, including staff who cared for her. She didn’t miss an opportunity to go out for any activity!
Pauline is survived by her son, David (Sherry) Kubalsky of Ankeny, Iowa, and five grandchildren, Angie, Carl, Shyla, Stephanie and Annette.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Arnie in 2006; and a sister, Lucille Kvam.
