Mock Accident meant to teach

Cresco - A mock drunk driving accident was held at Crestwood High School on April 9. The scenario  was how a young man driving a van went down a one-way street and struck a car with two female students inside. Juniors and seniors were then allowed outside to witness the aftermath of the accident.
Two students, who witnessed the crash, rushed to the scene and called 911. Shortly thereafter, Cresco Police officers and Iowa State Patrol arrived on the scene with Cresco Community Fire Department and Regional Health Services of Howard County ambulance following behind.
The passenger and driver were assessed. Sadly, the driver was “killed” in the mock accident. She was left under a white sheet while firefighters used the jaws of life to extract the passenger.
The most poignant moment for the adults in the crowd was when the dead girl’s mother came to the scene, screaming her daughter’s name.
The event was sponsored by Cresco Police Department, Regional Health Services of Howard County, Iowa State Patrol, Prevention 5 Coalition, HEROES, Lindstrom Funeral Home and Quam’s Auto Salvage.
The mock accident is held a few weeks before prom to bring home the fact that drinking and driving is illegal and can take lives.
