Memorial Day throughout Howard County

HOWARD COUNTY - American Legion and VFW chapters around the county will be recognizing the fallen at Memorial Day gatherings in selected areas.  
Local programs on Monday, May 27 will include:
Chester: See City for information.
Cresco –– Morning:
• 9:00 a.m. – The Veterans of Foreign Wars and Auxiliary, the American Legion Auxiliary, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Crestwood High School Band will meet and assemble at the Fareway parking lot and march to the Howard County Courthouse. 
• 9:05 a.m. – The Memorial Day Program will be held on the Courthouse Lawn (in case of rain, will be moved to the VFW Hall on Hwy. 9). 
• Following the services, participants are invited for lunch at the Veterans of War Hall. 
Cresco –– Evening:
• 7:00 p.m. – At the Veteran’s Freedom Rock (located on Hwy. 9, under the watertower) a reading of the names of the many veterans lost from the years before will be presented.  
Elma: 
• 11 a.m. – A Memorial Day Parade will start at the Memorial Hall and will continue, visiting several cemetaries in the area.  
• 12 Noon – Memorial Day Program at the Memorial Hall, followed by a free will donation lunch.
Lime Springs:
• 10:45 a.m. – A Memorial Day Program will be held at the Lime Springs Community Center.  
• 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. – Dinner will be served with only a free will donation asked. Everyone welcome!
Protivin:
• 9:00 a.m. – American Legion Post 605 will meet at Protivin Funeral Home. 
• 9:30 a.m. – Memorial Day Program/Services will take place at the Holy Trinity Church.
• 10:45 a.m. – Memorial Day Program continues to the cemetary, located next to the church.
• Please bring a covered dish to share at the Protivin Community Center following the services and program. 
Riceville:
• 8:30 a.m. – Leave for St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery (will arrive approximately at 8:36 a.m.), Proceed to Calvary Cemetery (approximate 8:48 a.m. arrival), Proceed to Saratoga Cemetery (approximate 9:08 a.m. arrival), Proceed to Wayne Cemetery (approximate 9:34 a.m. arrival).  
• 10:15 a.m. – Parade will start, taking off from the Riceville Public Library to Riverside Cemetery. There will be a Memorial Day Program at Riverside Cemetery. All will proceed to corner of Woodland Avenue and Hwy. 9 to raise the flag at Pierce Park to full staff and provide a firing squad salute.
