—New contest at H.C. Fair garners 72 entries

CRESCO - This was the first year for the Mullet Contest at the Mighty Howard County Fair, and with 72 participants, it will definitely be on the schedule of events for the 2023 fair!
Organizers and Fair Board Members Janice Ollendick and Heather Slifka recruited fellow hair dressers into being judges.
Don Ferrie was a team player and agreed to be the fairboard member who grew out his hair for the mullet contest. Board member Eric Reicks also grew his hair out.
Ollendick explained, “The Mullet hairstyle is short in the front and sides and longer in the back. It has been referred to as ‘Business in the front and party in the back!’”
The Mullet been around for many years. It was seen a lot in the 1980s. But was also around earlier than that. One of the most famous mullet heads from a few years back was singer Billy Ray Cyrus.
For the most part, the spectators were the winners, as they appreciated each mullet and the person displaying it.

First - Wallace “Ace” Korsmo, three-years-old of Alton, Iowa
Second - Briggs Bakken, three of Lime Springs, Iowa
• Youth Division: ages 7-12 (23)
First - Brantley Grabau, eight of Lime Springs
Second - Zack Soland, 12 of Preston, Minn.
• Teen Division - 13-18 (11)
First - Kolton Werges, 16 of Decorah, Iowa
Second - Braydon Hubka, 17 of Cresco, Iowa
• Men’s Division - 19-40 (eight)
First - Keaton Shane, 20 of Riceville, Iowa
Second - Devin Hauber, 24 of Cresco
• Elder’s Division - 40 and up (four)
First - Don Ferrie, 75 of Cresco
Second - Rick Ohrtman, 56 of Cresco
• Femullet Division - Females - All ages (three)
First - Nicki Gronwoldt, 35 of Lime Springs
Second - Cheryl McGinley, 61 of Eagle Bend, Minn.
