Cresco - All of the outside walls are up at the new Howard County Jail facility, located behind the county courthouse in Cresco. Currently, inside work is being done, including getting conduit placed that will hold wiring and concrete being poured.
Another area being worked on is the work release rooms. Those are set up for inmates who are able to leave for 8-9 hours a day to continue working at their job or when they get a job while incarcerated. These individuals may only have a two-week stay or longer. In the past, they were locked up with harder criminals.
The front of the jail faces west, across the parking lot from the courthouse. The left door will be the one where jail employees and other law officials will enter. The right door is the administrative section where the general public would talk to officers.
“This jail was one of my goals when I took office,” Sheriff Mike Miner said. Another goal he is working on is getting cameras in the area towns to help spot criminal activity.
