HEART’s Walk ‘N’ Wag

—Second annual event taking place Saturday, April 21

Vernon Springs - HEART (Helping Every Animal Rescue Team) is excited about its Second Annual Walk ‘N’ Wag event, once again at the beautiful Prairie’s Edge Nature Center south of Cresco. This will be held on Saturday, April 21 with events starting at 9 a.m.
Last year, organizers wanted to have a dog walk and discussed many places, but once members visited this location, they knew right away this is where they would host the event. It was the perfect site!
Free registration for the walk and events start at 9 a.m., with the walk starting at 10:30 a.m. It wraps up around 1 p.m. The first 50 participants to register get a gift goodie bag! Even if you are not planning on bringing a dog, you are welcome to come!
Aside from the beautiful walk, there will be many other happenings. A bake sale will have many goodies which include treats for pets, and there will be a free-will garage sale. Vendors will be there with a variety of their products. Members from the Good Dog Center in Decorah will be entertaining everyone with their dog tricks, and doggie parents can enter their pets to win prizes!
Fitting for a dog walk, there will be yummy “walking” tacos along with pop and water. There will be prize bags along the walk, and five lucky people will win a great prize. There will be many door prizes and some “paw-some” raffle items. If you can’t make the event, you can purchase raffle tickets on the website at www.heartrescue team.com.
If your pet(s) are not already microchipped, it is very important to have this done. Microchipping pets is the only tamper-proof, permanent ID owners can give their pets. Even if you aren’t participating in the walk, bring your pets (dogs and cats) to Walk ‘N’ Wag to get microchipped! No appointment is needed. It’s fast and feels like getting a routine vaccination.
Organizers encourage participants to have all their pets wear collars and ID tags and/or ID on the collar, but those things can fall off, be removed or get to be impossible to read. The cost of microchipping is only $25 and HEART will do the registering for you!
If you are unable to attend the event on April 21, e-mail heartrescue2016@gmail.com to discuss how they can help get your pets microchipped.
HEART is very excited about this year’s Walk ‘N’ Wag. It’s truly a fun, family-oriented event that will not only entertain everyone, but the money raised will help so many animals without a voice.
HEART serves Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin and other areas when they are needed to help animals. Everyone is a volunteer and one big family, who just want the best for animals. Its mission is simple . . . “Help as many animals as we can with a team of dedicated volunteers.” It is a foster-based 501(c)3 rescue with loving and dedicated volunteers who work with the animals until they are adopted to their forever homes.
HEART relies solely on donations, adoption fees and fund-raisers. Funds raised go to vet care, food and care of the animals. Many times the expenses outweigh their adoption fee, but they do whatever it takes to help those without a voice.
Katie Houlihan, HEART’s VP and Walk ‘N’ Wag coordinator says there are many ways the general public can help.
• Adopt — There are so many animals that just want to be loved. HEART gets their vet work completed; you provide a loving forever home.
• Foster — The animal rescue organization provides vet care and food. You provide love, care and attention to prepare them for their forever home.
• Join the HEART Team! Even if you can’t foster, there are many other ways to help. Transporting animals, fund-raising or just ask us how you can make a difference.
• Educate your family and friends on the importance of spay and neuter to help end unwanted animals. Educate others on the horrors of puppy mills and how to help someday put an end to them! Did you know there are a number of puppy mills right around our area?
• Donate money and/or items that will help the animals who deserve loving homes.
• Share the organization’s Facebook posts. Your share could mean an animal finds its forever home or you could help get a missing or found pet back to their family.
• Create your own fund-raiser. Please contact us first, and we can let you know how you can help. You could also start an online fund-raiser for your birthday or any post.
• Speak up — Animal neglect or abuse needs people to help those without a voice. Contact law enforcement — you can remain anonymous. Do what you can! It does make a difference!
HEART is always in need of fosters, and like many other rescues and shelters, if there is not an available foster, it isn’t able to assist as many animals that need help! If you would like more info and/or would like to become a foster, please e-mail heartrescue2016@gmail.com. Visit the website at www.heartrescueteam.com.
