H-W looking at 5-10 year plan for facilities

CRESCO - Representatives from DLR Group spoke to board members at the Sept. 17 regular meeting of the Howard-Winneshiek Community School District meeting. They gave a short time line on a facility plan.
Eric Beran and Andrew Van Leeuwen said a committee of 15-20 individuals would be good. Those members would include teachers, administration, individuals from all H-W communities and students. The first meeting of the group may be as soon as October.
• In other business, Supt. Ted Ihns gave his report, expressing the beginning of the school year has been going well. So far, enrollment is up from last year. The certified enrollment date is Oct. 15. That is when data from all districts will be collected.
He noted the annual audit had been completed, and proper reports had been completed by business manager Robyn Lane. They included CAR, Transport-ation Report, the Special Education Supplement Report and the Consolidated Accountability and Support Application (CASA).
In addition, Kim Kerian and Heather Suckow presented at the 2018 PBIS Coaches Forum “Creating Coaching Partnerships” at Des Moines.
• Personnel changes, including the acceptance of the resignation of Brittany Flugum, Food Service, were approved. New hires included associates Samantha Bulman, Meghan Harrod, Francesca Hayek, Staci Wicks and Lori Wiste.
New coaches who were approved included Karlee Grabau, Assistant Girls Basketball; Brandon Kerian, Assistant Boys Track; and Justin Thrailkill, Head Boys Golf.
Renewed coaches included Doug Sickles, Head Softball; Alicia Denner, Assistant Softball; Trish Hartman, Freshmen Softball; Gary Steffen, Head Baseball; Justin Denner, Assistant Baseball; Kolby LeFebvre, Freshmen Baseball; Riley Galvin, Game Day Volleyball Coach; and Karlee Grabau, Game Day Volleyball Coach.
• There were seven open enrollments out and one open enrollment in.
• The board approved CUSB Bank, Cresco Bank & Trust, Peoples Savings Bank, Bankers Trust of Des Moines and Iowa School Investment Trusts for financial institutions.
• Joe Braun was appointed as the district’s legal council.
• The Gifted and Talented Program plan was approved, as was the LAU plan.
• Board President Duane Bodermann was approved as the district’s delegate to the Iowa School Board Assembly in November.
• A Quit Claim Deed was approved for sale of the Elma school to the City of Elma. This should take care of all the paperwork associated with the building.
• The board approved a rental agreement for $300 to the Cresco Fitness Center gym.
• Regional Health Services of Howard County was contracted to have an athletic trainer for five days a week plus events. In the past, the trainer was only at the school two days a week.
The next board meeting will be Monday, Oct. 15 at 6 p.m. at NICC.
