Cresco - Violet Wankerl of Vi’s Pies will have baked goods available as a vendor for Girls Day Out on Saturday, Feb. 23 at the Expo Center in Cresco. (This event has been postponed until March 9)
The 12-year-old has been selling pies of all sizes since last summer, when she started attending the Tuesday and Friday Farmers Markets in Cresco.
Her mother, Jennifer, explained, “We moved here in June, and she wanted a way to make money.” Although it is no longer Farmers Market season, Violet still follows the rules of selling baked goods, meaning they do not need refrigeration.
Violet has been baking for several years. She and her elderly neighbor used to share baked goods back and forth.
She uses family recipes for most of her baked goods. Dutch apple pie, came from her great-grandma, Sylvia Blattner. Cherry is from Grandma Barb Blattner, and the blueberry recipe is from Great-Grandma Tess Brill. Those are the most popular flavors
Violet sells pies at Fat Ts in Cresco about every-other week and Dutch apple is the customer favorite. Violet’s favorite baked good is any special order (hint, hint)!
Besides individual and full pies, Violet bakes cookies, brownies, cupcakes, Krispie bars and more to sell. Jennifer will help out when needed.
Violet also experiments with different recipes, using her family as Guinea pigs! “We watched a baking show as a family, and then she made macaroons and is going to try eclairs,” said Jennifer.
Violet is very careful with her money. “I am saving for college and retirement,” she said. Her mom added she is also generous by purchasing gifts for her five siblings at times.
In addition, she uses her money to take care of her bunnies. Besides baking and bunnies, Violet enjoys gymnastics, piano, ukelele, violin, trumpet and singing.
