Howard County - Your electric bill is electrifying? Your heat seems to be going through the roof? A breeze is coming through the closed window?
These can be all warning signs of loss of energy, which is costly.
There can be hope for you at a relatively inexpensive cost. Green Iowa AmeriCorps has a team of college graduates working with the Winneshiek Energy District in Decorah who are conducting free energy assessments to area folks.
The group recently completed an assessment at the Dave Daley residence. Daley is a member of the Howard County Energy District.
Matthew Gausmann, one of the team members, noted, “Services include safety testing of appliances, water heater and furnace. We run blower door tests, which shows air infiltration in a house to show if it is losing energy through the cracks. We can change out old light bulbs to new LED.”
The AmeriCorps group’s labor is free. The only thing that is charged is for materials, and that is at cost. But it is free for anyone over age 65, low to moderate income levels, veterans and those with disabilities.
Most of the team members have graduated from Environmental Studies and wanted to put part of their degree to use by learning something new and broadening their horizons. Their service year is 11 months.
