Dollars for Scholars phone-a-thon

CRESCO - Crestwood High School students will reach out to the community during its Dollars for Scholars Phone-a-thon.

The financial goal for the organization is $25,000, and money raised funds scholarships to help high school students afford college.

Dollars for Scholars Board member Trish Hartman said, “During the Dollars for Scholars Phone-a-thon, students will make calls to community members from 6-9 p.m. both nights (Jan. 31 and Feb. 1). 

“We have generous donors, including Featherlite Trailers and Donaldson Company, and CUSB Bank and Cresco Bank & Trust allowed us to use their telephones, so if you see a phone number that comes from one of those businesses, Dollars for Scholars is the purpose of that call,” she said.

Hartman added the money raised goes directly to help fund student scholarships, and community members are welcome to donate whatever amount they are able.

“Any amount they donate is helpful to the students, because we know the costs of college are only going up,” she said.  “The students have to pay a lot more for textbooks, tuition and room and board, so any amount helps.”

Dollars for Scholars student representatives take to the phones to help their peers:

Maddie Steffen: “The goal for Dollars for scholars is to reach $25,000. The phone-a-thon is where students sign up to call the public, and we ask for donations.”

Abbie Burke: “We try to get it so every student can get some scholarships for college.”

Brooklyn Ferrie:  “I wanted to help so that when I’m a senior, I’m part of an organization, and help raise money for people to go to college.”

Dollars for Scholars has been giving scholarships since 1993 and has presented over $2 million in scholarships to students since then.

Its mission statement is ‘To enhance the opportunity of Crestwood High School Students to benefit from post-secondary education through scholarships and community support.’
