CRESCO - CUSB Bank proudly announced the donation of $75,000 to the Howard County Fair’s Ag Education Center.
The Ag Education Center is a 22,900 square foot livestock facility located on the Howard County Fairgrounds in Cresco. The Center features a modern swine production area, a modern milking parlor, large show arena with A/V and WIFI, and ADA compliant restrooms and showers.
The Center also houses dairy, sheep, goats, and bottle calves projects of the area 4-H and FFA members during the Howard County Fair.
The swine production area of the Center is more than a typical fair building housing pigs during the week of the fair. The building encompasses a unique educational facility that includes the latest technology in swine production, odor control, and is environmentally friendly.
One of the main goals of the new swine production area was to give youth the opportunity to show pigs at the Fair while assuming the responsibility of hands-on care of their animals and also learning about current swine production.
For three months before the Fair, March to June, any 4-H and FFA members can raise their pigs in the swine production center. The pigs are leased by the youth during this time from a local swine producer.
They are able to show their pigs and learn about swine production through the classes offered covering a variety of topics including: swine genetics, future of ag production, health and nutrition, marketing, bookkeeping, animal welfare, and show ring basics.
CUSB Bank President J. Scott Thomson said, “We are proud to support the Ag Education Center and its efforts. Agriculture is the corner stone of our communities in Iowa and we feel very strongly that education is the key to success. The Ag Education Center still needs more financial support. We encourage all donors, large and small, to help out with this worthwhile effort.”
