CFD conducts training at house

CRESCO - The Cresco Fire Department conducted their regularly scheduled training that takes place twice per month on Wednesday, Sept. 25, at an abandoned house at 114 7th St. West.
“This training was different in that we had been approached by Janel and Gary Langreck with the opportunity to train in a home that they own that was scheduled for demolition,” Cresco Fire Chief Neal Stapelkamp said.  “We graciously accepted this offering and conducted training at the residence located on 7th St. West.
“The Cresco Fire Department was able to simulate a house fire with the use of artificial smoke that filled the entire home.  The home was divided into two sections by our Training Officers Adam Ollendieck and Annette Trachta.  We were able to have two simulations going on at the same time where firefighter teams would enter the building with their proper Personal Protective Equipment, Self Contained Breathing Apparatus, charged hoseline, hand tools, Thermal Image Camera, and radio for communications to the exterior.
“The purpose of these evolutions was to safely search out, find, and remove a victim trapped or disabled in a structure fire.  All this was accomplished in zero visibility conditions.  In addition to these evolutions, members were able to practice Ground Ladder operations, Roof Ladder operations, Aerial Ladder operations, Roof Ventilation Techniques, Hose Line Deployment, Fire Ground Communications, Incident Command, and a number of other skills often used during actual incidents.   The members of the Cresco Fire Department wish to thank the Langrecks for offering us this great training opportunity,” Stapelkamp said.
