Caffrey gives annual update on Cresco Fitness Center

Cresco - Bill Caffrey, Cresco Park & Rec Director, gave the actual revenue and expenses of the fiscal year ending June 30, 2018 to Cresco City Council at its regular meeting on Nov. 5.
~ He noted there were 60 rentals of Kessel Lodge (excluding meal site) compared with 72 from the prior year. It made a profit of over $9,000.
~ The City budgets $20,000 per year from Local Option Sales Tax (LOST) to help balance the budget. This year, the Fitness Center used the entire amount.
~ Completed projects for the parks included new tennis lights and new floor in the art building. The fitness center received a recumbent bike, batting cages, new lane dividers, swim team software, new spa heater and cover, remodeled Gunderson Room, candy machine and lower meeting room. For recreation, locals can now sign up on-line. Also, the Twins bus trip was a success.
~ A group of locals is looking at fund-raising to save some of the ash trees in Beadle Park. There are currently 19 ash trees with five being treated and the remaining 14 scheduled for removal. Caffrey said if the other ash trees were removed, the park would look really bare.
• In other business from the meeting, two bids were opened regarding the removal of 136 boulevard ash trees.
The low bid of Complete Tree Service for $44,800 was accepted. Also submitting a bid was Wilson Custom Tree for $51,340.
• Quotes were also received for a new truck and dump body for the Street Department.
Bids came from Don’s Truck for a Freightliner with a Henderson box (the preferred model from employees) for $106,670; Truck Country for a Freightliner with a Beau-Roc box for $101,587; Truck Country for a Freightliner with a Henderson box for $107,832; Thompson Truck for an International with a Beau-Roc box for $106,838; and Thompson Truck for an International with a Henderson box for $113,083.
Council accepted the low bid of $101,587.
• Mayor Mark Bohle and City Clerk Michelle Girolamo were authorized to sign the Storm Sewer Easements for the 7th Ave. SW Storm Sewer Extension Project.
• The contract for the Fire Department storage facility was approved with the contractor being Cresco Building Service. The total contract was $536,142.
• Council approved City Hall to establish the City of Cresco Credit Card Processing. The City will now be able to accept credit cards from customers, with the customer paying the fee.
• The City will continue with nuisance abatement procedures regarding a property at 218 5th Ave. East.
• Cresco Industrial Development Corp. and the City of Cresco approved a $50,000 Revolving Loan Fund request from Kelly O’Donnell and Casey Bouska to potentially purchase V&V Insurance.
• Public Works Director Rod Freidhof said the downtown alley project was completed and Skyline was set to touch up 2nd St. East one more time before winter.
• Police Officer Lt. David Godman was able to secure seven free car computers from the City of Dubuque, which is updating its systems. Brand new, the computers cost about $3,000-4,000 each, so the donation is a great gift for the City.
• A Class C Liquor License was approved for M&M Lounge LLC to expand its existing license to both sides of the building.
The next meeting will be Monday, Nov. 19 at Cresco City Hall at 7 p.m.
