Another scam, stay vigilent!

Lime Springs - Judy Mahr of rural Lime Springs reported to the Times Plain Dealer a scam regarding her grandson.
She received a phone call from her “grandson,” Truman. He told her he had been in an accident with a man from Florida, and he needed $12,000. “I’ll pay you back on Monday,” he told Mahr. “And don’t tell anyone I called.”
She told him it didn’t sound like him, and he replied he had a cold. He also stated she would get a phone call from his representative with instructions.
“I would’ve done it,” Mahr said, “because I know Truman would have paid me back. But then I thought about it.”
She called Truman, who was completely surprised by the conversation.
Mahr then got a phone call from “Mary Scott,” Truman’s representative. “I asked her where Truman lived, and she hung up on me.”
This is just another example of how the scammers are trying to get money out of unwitting grandparents.
If you have a question about the validity of a money request, ask about it. Call the grandchild or your children.
The scammers are getting more sophisticated, using a second scammer to make it look legitimate.
Stay vigilant—by trying to help out a grandchild, you may be giving away the entire bank.
