2019 Fair Queen Candidates

CRESCO - Two deserving young ladies will be competing to earn the honor of being named the 2019 “Mighty” Howard County Fair Queen. The contest is sponsored by Farm Bureau and the Howard County Fair Board.
The two candidates include: Ashley Ferrie and Erin Ryan.
Coronation of the queen will take place on Wednesday, June 26 at 5:30 p.m. on the Scheidel Plaza Stage at the “Mighty” Howard County Fairgrounds in Cresco.
Ashley Ferrie of Cresco is the daughter of Josh and Deb Ferrie. She just finished her sophomore year at Crestwood High School this year.
She is involved in FFA, HEROES, sports (Cross Country, Basketball, Track).
She has been an active member in 4-H, FFA and Church Group (Youth Group). 
Outside of school, she has a job at Fareway; works at Wisdom & Wellness at the school; shows Swine and Dairy Cattle at the fair. 
The honors and special recognitions she has received are Ast. Reporter for FFA; Sportsmanship Award for Basketball; Perfect Attendance. 
Her hobbies include working with animals, volunteering, hanging with friends, crafts, outdoor activities and camping. 
Ashley’s sponsor is Arts Milling of Protivin.
Erin Ryan of Cresco is the daughter of Jason and Sara Ryan. She recently finished her junior year at Crestwood High School this year.
She is involved in FFA, FFA Blood Drive, FFA Ditch Cleanup, FFA Ag Day, FFA District and State Contest and FFA Livestock Judging. She is a member of Silver Cord, a Leader for the Freshman Respect Retreat and a Dollars for Scholars Student Representative. She participated in the World Food Prize Iowa Youth Institute in 2018 and 2019. She was selected to represent the school in the fall 2018 World Food Prize and is a Borlaug Scholar.
She has been an active member of FFA since her freshman year of high school. She has been a member of the Space Age Farmers 4-H group for the past seven years, a member of the 4-H County Council for three years and participated in the 4-H Camera Corps and is a member of the Orleans Church Council. 
Outside of school, she volunteers at the Cresco Public Library helping with the Children’s Summer Reading Program and the Library’s Book Sale. She has completed over 120 hours of community service. She works at food stands and mixed malts for the Moo Mobile at the Mighty Howard County Fair, worked with Farm Safety Day at the fairgrounds for the past three years, shown FFA rabbits and chickens and 4-H beef cattle at the Iowa State Fair, volunteered the past two years at the Little Hands on the Farm at the Iowa State Fair. I have been working part-time jobs since the age of 14. For the past two years, I have been working for Springer Simmentals doing the job I love working with beef cattle.
The honors and special recognitions she has received include: applied and selected to be a member of the National Honor Society; Academic Letter Winner for the past three years; the FFA Assistant Reporter from 2017-2018; FFA Treasurer from 2018-2019; FFA President for the 2019-2020 school year; have earned FFA Green Hand Degree; FFA Chapter Degree; FFA Letter Winner for the past three years; FFA Gold Involvement the past three years; member of the 4-H County Council for the past three years; current Vice-President of the 4-H County Council; have been the Space Age Farmers President for the past four years; selected to participate in 4-H educational  presentations, working exhibits, photography and other projects at the Iowa State Fair.
Her hobbies include spending time with her family and friends, baking, showing cattle and working with her animals to get them ready for the county and state fair. She also enjoys helping children learn about agriculture, farm animals and farm safety.
