DES MOINES - Crestwood grapplers Mitchell Williams (106 pounds), Mitchell Schmauss (120), Carter Schmauss (126) and Brock Voyna (175) represented Northeast Iowa extremely well at the 100th Annual Boys’ State Wrestling Tournament held in Des Moines from Feb. 19-22 as three of the four Cadets finished in the top eight of their respective weight class.
Freshman Mitchell Williams (41-13 season record) won four matches, including three pins, and lost three to take eighth place at 106 pounds.
Senior Mitchell Schmauss (42-3) won his first two matches before he lost by fall to eventual State Champion Brayden Bohnsack of Union in the semifinals. In the consolation round, Schmauss tallied two wins to grab third place at 120.
Junior Carter Schmauss (44-5) won three straight decisions, including a 6-4 win over 2024 State Champion Gage Spurgeon of E-B-F in the semifinals. In the championship match against C. J. Davis of Burlington Notre Dame, Schmauss led 7-5 with under 20 seconds left in the third period before Davis rallied for seven points to beat Schmauss, 12-7. Schmauss took second at 126 pounds.
At 175, Brock Voyna (31-8) posted three wins and lost two but didn’t place in the top eight.
“We are super proud of all four wrestlers and how they wrestled at the State Tournament!” Cadet Head Coach Keith Anderlik said. “Three place-winners and one making it to the blood round (championship) is a very good showing!
“Our guys battled hard and gave it everything they had in all of their matches! It was an emotional roller coaster the whole tournament," the coach said.
