CLEAR LAKE - Taking on the cream of the crop at the Class 2A District 5 Wrestling Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 15, four Crestwood grapplers finished in the top two to punch their tickets to the State Tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, which runs from Feb. 19-22.
Cadet freshman Mitchell Williams (No. 12 ranked, 37-10 record) tallied two pins and a decision to grab first place at 106 and earn his first trip to State.
At 120 pounds, senior Mitchell Schmauss (No. 2, 38-2) posted two pins to capture first place and earn his fourth trip to State. Mitchell placed fifth at State in 2024.
Wrestling at 126, junior Carter Schmauss (No. 3, 41-4) posted a tech fall win in the semifinals and a pin in the final to earn his third trip to Des Moines. Carter finished fifth at State last year.
Competing at 175, senior Brock Voyna (No. 8, 27-7) won by fall in the semifinals before losing a 13-1 major decision to No. 1 Christian Dunning of Clear Lake in the finals. In the second place match, Voyna won by fall over Izaiah Duncan of Forest City to earn his third trip to State. Voyna placed fifth at State in 2024.
As a team, the Cadets placed fifth with 117 points. Hampton-Dumont-CAL won the team title with 186 points.
"We competed well at the district tournament," Cadet Head Coach Keith Anderlik said. "The boys went out and scrapped and gave it their all and when that happens, the coaching staff is happy. Mitchell Williams had a great day, winning the district in a very deep weight class. Mitchell and Carter Schmauss have been very consistent this year and are looking to compete for a state title this week. Brock Voyna is continuing to get better each week, after his delayed start to the season with an injury. We are very confident that all four state contestants are capable of doing very well at the state tournament! As for the guys who didn't make the state tournament, most of them will be returning next year and off season work is very key for their success for next year! They just need to commit to the offseason and trust the process."
