Crestwood girls bounce Waukon; fall to Comets; lose to Hawks in regionals

MANCHESTER - The Crestwood softball team concluded the regular season by splitting road games against Waukon and Charles City.
On July 8, the Cadets rallied to defeat the Waukon Indians, 7-2. Taking on Charles City on July 9, a late rally by Crestwood fell short as the Comets held on for a 9-6 win.
Playing West Delaware in the first round of the Class 3A Region 7 Tournament on July 11, the Cadets battled the Hawks tooth-and-nail before losing a close contest, 2-3. 
The loss ended Crestwood’s season at 12-16 overall. West Delaware advanced to face No. 3 Dubuque Wahlert in the region semifinals on July 13.
 
Cadets 7, Waukon 2
Waukon held a 2-0 lead after three innings before Crestwood answered with two runs each in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings to win 7-2.
Ella Bergan had one run and two walks for the Cadets. Isabella Schlatter had one run and one walk. Jordyn Fisk had two singles and one run batted in.
Blaire Cummings had two hits, including one double, two runs and three RBI. Ainsley Teeling had one double. Makenzie Gallagher had two hits, including one double, one run and one RBI. Keira Shea and Erica Ollendick each had one run. Taylor Reis had two runs.
Ainsley Teeling was the winning pitcher. She tossed seven innings, allowed four hits, two runs (one earned), two walks and struck out 13.

C. City 9, Cadets 6
A late rally by Crestwood came up short as Charles City held on to edge the Cadets, 9-6, on July 9.
Charles City led 6-0 after three innings. Crestwood rallied for two runs each in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, but the Comets tallied three runs in the sixth to earn the win.
Isabella Schlatter and Ella Bergan each  had one run and one walk. Laney Peter had one single, one stolen base, one walk and two RBI.
Peyton Ullom had one single, one run, one stolen base and one walk. Nevaeh Howe had one single. Kyra Butikofer had one single and one run. Keira Shea, Erica Ollendick and Dannae Hubka each had one run. Hubka had one stolen base.
Kiernan Ruppert was the losing pitcher. She tossed six innings, allowed four hits, nine runs (six earned), six walks and struck out six.

W. D. 3, Cadets 2
The West Delaware Hawks took a 3-0 lead in the fifth inning and held off a fierce comeback by the Cadets to win, 3-2, in the first round of the region tournament on July 11 in Manchester.
The Hawks jumped on the scoreboard first with one run in the third inning. Avery Schmitz singled and Abby Kass drew a walk. Susie Funke reached second on a Cadet error, which allowed Schmitz to score.
West Delaware added two runs in the fourth to push the lead to 3-0. Lena Petion and Maleah Demmer singled. Lily Kass came in as a courtesy runner for Demmer. Schmitz walked to load the bases. Abby Kass reached base on an error, which allowed Petion to score. Lily Kass scored a few pitches later on a wild pitch before Vedah Langel flew out to end the inning.
Crestwood tallied one run in the sixth to cut the lead to 3-1. With one out, Blaire Cummings and Peyton Ullom both singled. After Laney Peter flew out, Ainsley Teeling drew a walk to load the bases. Nevaeh Howe was hit by a pitch, which allowed Cummings to score. Makenzie Gallagher grounded out to end the inning.
In the top of the seventh, the Cadets didn’t go down without a fight. With one out, Ella Bergan and Jordyn Fisk both singled. Keira Shea came in as a courtesy runner for Fisk. After Blaire Cummings popped out, Peyton Ullom reached on an infield single to load the bases. Laney Peter reached base on an error, which allowed Bergan to score but Shea was tagged out at home to end the game.
Ella Bergan recorded two singles and scored one run. Blaire Cummings had two singles, one double and one run. Peyton Ullom tallied two singles. 
Jordyn Fisk had one single. Nevaeh Howe was hit by two pitches and had one run batted in. Ainsley Teeling and Laney Peter each drew one walk.
Ainsley Teeling pitched well but was the losing pitcher. She tossed six innings, allowed five hits, three runs (no earned runs), two walks and struck out two.
