CRESCO - Catherine Ann Kappes, age 77 of Cresco, Iowa died May 1, 2017, at Hawkeye Care Center in Cresco from a short illness of cancer.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, May 5, 2017, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Lourdes, Iowa. Burial will be in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m., Thursday, May 4, 2017 at Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home, Cresco, with a scripture service at 4 p.m. Visitation will continue an hour prior to the time of service Friday at the church.Kathy was born Sept. 5, 1939, the daughter of Raymond and Mayme Koudelka Clynch.
She graduated from Cresco High School in 1957. She then moved to Cresco and began working at Elm Street Café, where she met Neil Vincent Kappes, whom she married on Nov. 26, 1958 at Our Lady of Lourdes Church.
Following their marriage, they lived in Decorah, Iowa, and Kathy worked at the Springer Hotel & Restaurant. The couple moved to Ridgeway, Iowa, living there for six years, followed by a move to a farm south of Schley, Iowa where they resided until settling into Hawkeye Care Center in December 2016.
Kathy enjoyed milking cows until 1988, when her youngest sons took over the dairy operation, and she began to work at Howard County Care Facility as a nurse’s aide, retiring in 2005.
Kathy was a loving wife and caregiver to Neil and a wonderful mom, grandma and great-grandma. She enjoyed time spent with her family and made sure no one went hungry.
She is survived by her husband, Neil; four children, Gary of Eagan, Minn., Karen Ptacek of New Hampton, Iowa, David (Jillaine) of Cresco and Robert (Tammie) of Dexter, Minn.; a sister, Betty (Louis) Torkelson of Rochester, Minn.; a special family friend, Kenny Waller; two brothers-in-law, Zeno (Helen) Kappes of Burr Oak, Iowa and Leonard (Angie) Kappes of Ridgeway; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Lorraine (James) Daley; and a brother, George Clynch.
