Pick-up versus semi

On March 28, 2023 at 3:53 p.m., the Howard County Sheriff’s Office took a call of a semi versus vehicle on Highway 9, just west of Cresco.  Nineteen-year-old Eric Hernandez-Uribe from Ridgeway was east-bound on Highway 9 when he attempted to stop for a semi that was slowing to make left turn into the Cresco Livestock Market.
Hernandez-Uribe brakes failed and he was unable to stop. He rear-ended the semi trailer, driven by 33-year-old Anton Tomash from Alta Vista.  The 2006 Dodge Ram was considered a total loss.  The trailer owned by Murray Livestock Transport LLC from Decorah had minimal damage.
Hernandez-Uribe was transported by ambulance to the Howard County Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.  Tomash did not receive injuries.
Assisting the Howard County Sheriff’s Office were Cresco Police Department, Cresco Fire Department, Howard County Ambulance and Cresco Towing and Recovery.
The front bumper of the pickup was ripped completely off by the rolling rear tires of the trailer and became wedged between the bottom of the trailer and the tires.  The Cresco Fire Department used its new battery-operated Jaws of Life to lift the trailer and get the bumper out.
Deputy Grubl covered the report.
